Why COVID-19 levy should not be scrapped – Prof. Nonvignon

A Professor at the University of Ghana, Justice Nonvignon, has stated that calls for the scrapping of the COVID-19 levy may not be necessarily accurate.

According to him, instead of scrapping the levy, it could be designated for other purposes or special programs.

He also explained that Ghana can generate about $6000 from the levy, which can be used to augment the 1 million allocations that the government makes for the health sector.

Speaking at his inaugural lecture on the topic “The Pursuit of Health Amidst Scarcity: Economics, Health and the Romance in-between”, he noted that it is prudent for the government to increase allocations to the health sector whiles ensuring that these monies are properly utilized.

He said: “Why don’t we strengthen that levy and ensure that we can cover other programmes. For instance, I talked about some progrqammes, malaria has been battling us for how long? How much funding do we put there; it will surprise you to know that most of the malaria funding comes from the global fund. The global fund also depends on other funders. Like vaccines, a lot of the vaccines that we purchase especially for children come from other funders.

“So how can we take advantage of the COVID-19 levy? As I said the COVID-19 levy has the potential to raise as much as $600 million dollars a year. Now, 600 million is 60% of the 1 billion we give to the health sector every year, so if we can raise 60 to 70% more, why don’t we painstakingly as citizens support the government and ensure that such a levy is kept?” he opined.

Prof. Novignon expatiated on the direct linkage between the health of citizens and the growth of any economy and noted that it is for this reason that the government must take the health needs of its country seriously.

He said the COVID-19 pandemic was only one out of several health issues that befall the continent, therefore it is necessary that the government always makes adequate preparations in order to combat them.

You’ll cross examine witness yourself if your lawyers don’t appear – Judge to Gyakye Quayson

The Member of Parliament for the Assin-North constituency, James Gyakye Quayson, may have to cross-examine the first prosecution in his ongoing criminal trial on Monday, July 31, 2023.

This is after the High Court in Accra ruled that the embattled legislator would have no choice but to cross-examine the witness if his lawyers fail to be present for the trial on Monday.

The High Court judge presiding over the case, Justice Mary Maame Ekue Yanzuh, gave this ruling due to the failure of Quayson’s lawyer, Justine P. Teriwajah, to appear for the presiding on Friday, July 28, 2023.

According to a report by graphic.com.gh, Justine P. Teriwajah, who was expected to cross-examine Richard Takyi Mensah, the prosecution’s first witness on Friday, was absent for medical reasons.

In a medical excuse duty addressed to the court, the lawyer said that he was indisposed.

The excuse duty would last for three days, from Friday, July 28 to Sunday, July 30.

The report also indicated that the lawyer also requested the court should allow Mr Quayson to travel outside the jurisdiction for medical attention during the legal vacation which will last for two months.

But a Deputy Attorney-General, Alfred Tuah-Yeboah, opposed the request saying, “It will be in the interest of justice and fairness if the witness is not made to mount the box again in the next legal year”.

He added that Quayson could participate in the trial virtually provided he travelled outside the jurisdiction during the legal vacation.

The case was adjourned to Monday, July 31, 2023, after the court allowed Gyakye Quayson to speak.

He pleaded with the court to allow him to travel for medical attention.

Wenchi seat is a bonus for the NPP in 2024 – Deputy PBC boss

The Deputy Chief Executive Officer (CEO) in charge of Operations at the Produce Buying Company(PBC) Limited, Alfred Ofori Annye has promised to reclaim the Wenchi Parliamentary Seat for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 election.

Alfred Annye is of the conviction that, if he was able to lead the party in the then Brong Ahafo Region in 2016 and won majority seats, then it’s a clear indication that winning back the Wenchi seat would be very easy.

” If I was able to win 20 seats out of the 29 seats when we were Brong Ahafo Region, it means that this one seat at my home is a bonus for the NPP. The NPP should expect that I will win the seat should delegates vote for me”. He was optimistic.

Addressing party persons at the Wench Constituency secretariat of the NPP after filing his nomination forms, he urged them to keep their hopes alive.

So far, Annye is the only candidate who has picked and submitted his forms after the NPP announced the opening of nominations in orphan Constituencies where there are no sitting MPs.

The aspirant used the opportunity to call for unity noting that it is key for the success of the party revealing he has visited all past executives who contested and lost in the various positions in the party to broker peace.

“The message has been Unity for the Party”, he stated adding that delegates in the constituency have nicknamed him the “Practical Unifier” in view of his crusade for party unity.

West Africans must oppose all sorts of military takeovers within the authority of the ECOWAS – Akufo-Addo

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has urged West Africans to oppose all sorts of military takeovers within the authority of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

The Ghanaian president thinks that Africans should not support what he calls the unconstitutional method of changing administrations in the sub-region.

President Akufo-Addo made the call at Liberia’s 147th Independence Day celebrations.

He stated that insecurity in West Africa must disappear for development to take place.

“It is incumbent that we all stand together in our generation to defeat the menace of coups and guarantee the peace and stability which are essential to the rapid economic development of our areas which is the surest way to banish poverty in our time and the same vain, we must reiterate our commitment to democratic governance in the ECOWAS space and reject all unconstitutional changes of government.”

The call by the President comes barely 24 hours after presidential guards in Niger seized President Mohamed Bazoum and blockaded his residence, as well as key ministries in a coup attempt.

Meanwhile, the African Union (AU) has condemned the incident.

The AU described the action by the soldiers as “unacceptable”.

We’re searching for President and not a flag bearer, so vote for me – Bawumia

Vice President Dr. Muhamudu Bawumia has requested New Patriotic Party (NPP) delegates to vote for a candidate to become Ghana’s president.

According to the NPP’s aspiring presidential candidate, the party’s approaching presidential primary is not to determine a flag bearer, but to elect someone who can become president of the republic.

He added that the NPP should choose someone who can break the eight-year curse rather than just a flag bearer.

He believes that choosing a presidential candidate does not require someone who is wealthy, but rather someone who has a track record of accomplishing something unique that Ghanaians will accept.

He has so encouraged party members to give him a chance because he is ready to break the eight.

Dr. Bawumia made these remarks on his Western regional campaign visit.

He went to Takoradi, Efia, Sekondi, Kwesimintim, Esikado Ketan, and Shama.

The Vice President emphasised that his track record was clear to all.

He cited his digitization agenda to back up his assertion that he has done a lot for the party and should be chosen as an NPP candidate.

“We intend to win the presidential election in 2024. We are not looking for a flag bearer but for a president. The authority we seek is to keep power in 2024 and elect a president. We are not interested in a wealthy man as a candidate because if you are elected, you would not use your resources to build the country. You will build Ghana with public resources rather than private resources. We need someone with a vision, someone with innovations, ideas, creativity, a track record, experience, humility, maturity, and tolerance. We don’t want someone elected because he or she pretends to be wealthy.”

“I have not yet been elected President, but if you ask about my track record as Vice President, I can point to Ghana card, digital address system, mobile money interoperability, agenda 111, one constituency one ambulance, Zongo development fund, ECG digitalisation, NHIS digitalisation; if I have achieved these things as Vice President, I will do far more if elected President.”

Wife of Tina Turner’s late son hints at using his sperm to have a baby

The wife of Tina Turner’s son has hinted at plans to conceive a baby using his sperm. The French TV personality, Afida Turner, said her husband as her birthday gift offered her a frozen sperm before his demise in December. She is optimistic that despite being 46 years old, she would conceive a baby for her late husband.

Ronnie Turner, who was the youngest son of music legend Tina Turner and Ike Turner, died last year at the age of 62 from cancer. Ronnie appeared in “What’s Love Got to Do With It”, the 1993 film highlighting the true life story of his mom’s frosty love life with his father. Afida Turner said her intention is to preserve the legacy of her husband.

“It’s still bad because he’s not here, but what can I do?” Afida Turner added. “At least I will have a little one that looks like Ronnie. A monster like me and him, can you imagine?”, she is quoted in media reports. It’s been double jeopardy for Afida Turner who has been mourning her late husband and mother-in-law. Tina Turner died in May at the age of 83.

She said since then, her life has been full of grief and nightmares trying to deal with the loss. According to her, her days are filled with memories of Ronnie Turner and his absence. She said as much as people are comforted by their pictures and music, the vacuum they have left in her heart always plays up anytime she goes home.

She conceded that she has been depressed by the turn of events and needed strength to cope with the dark moment. She intimated she is trying not to lose her mind and taking the loss one day at a time.
