We play football for money- Odion Ighalo on why players are moving to Saudi Arabia

Nigerian international, Odion Ighalo has opened up that most players are in football to make money and live comfortably.

In an interview with Oma Akatugba, Ighalo candidly expressed that most players, including himself, are in football to secure the bag and lead comfortable lives.

While many players often publicly proclaim their love for the game and cite passion as their main driving factor, Ighalo believes that money plays a significant role in their decision-making.

“I’m not like those players who will say we are in football because of passion. Bro, it’s because of money,” Ighalo said.

Drawing attention to Cristiano Ronaldo’s recent move to Saudi Arabia, Ighalo highlighted the fact that even someone as accomplished as Ronaldo, who has achieved tremendous success in his career, made the decision to join a club in Saudi Arabia for financial reasons.

He said, “Ighalo stated that although Ronaldo has achieved a lot in football he chose to come to Saudi Arabia to make money. See people who are going to Saudi Arabia, big players. Look at Ronaldo, is it passion he is playing for?”

“Ronaldo has made 100 times more than I have made in my life but he still went to Saudi. So you want to tell me it’s because of money?” he quizzed.

Lionel Messi reveals what he would have done if Argentina had lost the World Cup final to France

Lionel Messi has disclosed that he would have retired from international football had Argentina lost the World Cup final to France.

After suffering a shocking defeat to Saudi Arabia in their group opener, the Copa American champions bounced back to winning ways with wins over Mexico and Poland to emerge group winners.

Lionel Scaloni’s side matched on to the grand finale after edging Australia, the Netherlands, and Croatia in the knockout stages.

La Albiceleste set up a meeting with Les Bleus in what many have described as the greatest World Cup final ever.

After taking a two-goal lead in the first half courtesy of goals from Lionel Messi from the spot and Angel Di Maria, Kylian Mbappe hit a brace in quick succession to restore parity for Didier Deschamp’s side.

Messi gave Argentina the lead again in extra time before Kylian Mbappe pecked them back again with a late penalty deep into extra time.

Argentina eventually dispatched France 4-2 in the shootouts to clinch their first World Cup title since 1986.

According to GOAL, Messi noted that he would have called time on his international career if Argentina had lost the final to France.

“I enjoyed very much every moment throughout the World Cup. I enjoyed it like I had never done before. A bit because I knew it could be my last World Cup. And to be honest, I think if we had not been World Champions I would no longer be here in the national team. Absolutely, but now, being a World Champion I can’t leave the national team. I have to enjoy all this.”

I felt bad missing the World Cup – Majeed Ashimeru

Midfielder Majeed Ashimeru has opened up on the disappointment of missing the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

The Anderlecht star was initially named in the provisional squad for the tournament before he was eventually dropped from the final team by coach Otto Addo.

Despite failing to make the team to Qatar, Ashimeru expressed delight seeing his friends in the squad do well at the World Cup.

“That’s the biggest competition in the world and every player wants to be there. I think for me personally I felt bad but also I felt like, these are my guys going and they need my support,” he told Tv3.

“Me seeing Salis, like doing really well at the World Cup makes me feel proud because he is a guy I talk to a lot and walk and Kudus, he is like a little brother, we grew up in the same hood so it made me feel very proud,” he added.

His absence in the final squad caused a little bit of outrage after legendary striker Asamoah Gyan reacted over his exclusion.

Ashimeru has since been a regular invite to the national team, playing in the qualifiers against Angola and Madagascar.

Fixing the Fundamentals: Understanding, Evaluating Kurt Okraku’s National Football Philosophy

President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Mr. Simeon Edwin Simeon Okraku, also known as the “Game Changer,” is on a noble mission.

His agenda is to rejuvenate the passion of the nation with his newly released National Football Philosophy, which is also termed “Ghana Football DNA.”

The Philosophy seeks to give Ghana football a new identity and direction, while creating proper playing pathways for various national teams.

This is to ensure that success can be achieved in the long term with Ghana reinstated as an African football powerhouse.

It is no hidden secret that the country’s football fortunes have been dwindling over the past years with some erratic performances from various national teams.

For instance, the once fearsome Black Stars (Ghana), a hitherto household name in African football, is gradually lurking behind other nations like Morocco, Egypt, South Africa, among others.

The woes of Ghana’s football are real.

Currently, the Black Stars are not among the top-10 ranked sides in Africa and are now 59th on the FIFA Rankings and 11th on the continent.

The performances from our youthful national sides have been largely disappointing as the men’s and women’s teams struggle to qualify for major championships.

In cases where they have the chance to participate in such events, their general performances have been abysmal.

The current Youth and Sports Minister, Mr. Mustapha Ussif, recently fumed over the poor performances of our national teams – telling the players to exhibit the spirit of nationalism and patriotism when representing the nation.

The players should not focus on bonuses, says the Minister.

In his view, the GFA President, Mr. Okraku, contends the National Football Philosophy would be the new framework and manual that would help fix the fundamentals of the country’s football.

It is structured to serve as the bedrock for football development as his administration seeks to sustain the football ecosystem.

Mr. Okraku said, during the launch of the National Football Philosophy, that they ought to strengthen the fundamentals of the most popular sporting discipline, if Ghana was to take its rightful place as a football giant on the continent.

The concept or new direction, according to him, was informed by a research by his technical team covering a period of two years.

He explained that the technical team undertook a scientific survey to understand the strengths, weaknesses, and values of Ghana’s football, which triggered the need to establish the National Football Philosophy.

The GFA President noted that coaches would play a crucial role in the implementation of this game-changing Philosophy as they offer the blueprint for the right training techniques to the nation’s younger footballers.

In an interview with the GNA Sports, Mr. Karim Zito, a highly experienced youth national team coach, stated that giving our football identity is the right direction for changing our fortunes.

“So, most of the coaches, including myself, made inputs into this new document because we know what the football fans want.

“We had a certain identity in the past, but we seek to give our football a new identity, so the National Football Philosophy is in the right direction,” he stated.

Mr. Zito said Ghanaians were known for playing good football, as we were once called the Brazilians of Africa.

“Therefore, this new Ghana football DNA would bring back the lost glory of how we played in the past,” he said.

When asked whether the new document would help change the results and performance on the pitch, Karim Zito answered: “Its immediate positive impact on the pitch would depend on us, the coaches, and how we use it to suit the purpose of the new Philosophy, especially at the national level.

“We should be able to use it from the bottom to the top, that is, from Under-17 to the national team.

Paa Kwesi Fabin, an experienced tactician and current coach of Aduana Stars, said the provision of tools to the coaches for this Philosophy to be realised would be key to its success.

“As a nation, we need to provide the required tools for coaches to help in the implementation of this Philosophy. When you go to some teams, they struggle to get the requisite training materials to learn and play with,” he asserted.

Mr. Fabin also stated the need to improve our scouting system, if this Philosophy is to be realised, because we have plenty of football talents.

In conclusion, the National Football Philosophy might be the first step for Ghana to achieve prominence in Africa and world football at large.

But it could take a long time for positive results to be achieved, especially if the right tools are not made available for its implementation.

Give next Asante Kotoko board and management 10-years mandate – Yusif Chibsah

Former Asante Kotoko midfielder Yusif Chibsah has passionately appealed to Manhyia, calling for an unprecedented ten-year mandate to be bestowed upon the upcoming board and management of Asante Kotoko.

With a deep-rooted belief in the potential of the Ghana Premier League club, Chibsah fervently advocates for a long-term vision that could revitalize the team’s fortunes and propel them to unprecedented heights.

According to Chibsah, the three years always given to the board and management don’t help the club.

“Next Asante Kotoko Board and Management must be given ten years,” he told Kumasi-based Oyerepa FM.

“Three-year terms for Asante Kotoko management and board not helping the club. Three years ago, Kotoko was at the same point that we are today,”

“We have tried this method to two-three times and it’s not helping so I am pleading with Manhyia to give the next board and management at least five and ten years,”

“This period will help in implementing policies and strategies in achieving his goals and target. Three years in football is too short,” he ended.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr in talks to sign Sadio Mane from Bayern Munich in €30m deal

According to news outlet Ariadhiah, Mane will exit Bayern Munich this summer and join Cristiano Ronaldo at Al-Nassr. This comes after it was revealed that the two parties met up on Thursday in order to discuss a potential deal for the 31-year-old winger who found it tough to adjust to life in Germany after six mightily successful years at Liverpool.

The news of a potential move for Mane does come at an odd time for the Saudi Arabian side who are currently banned from registering any new players because they failed to pay the promised fee for former Leicester striker Ahmed Musa. If they are to land yet another huge name, that issue would have to be resolved first. FIFA have confirmed the ban will be lifted “upon the settlement of the debts being confirmed by the creditors concerned.”

It seems discussions with the Saudi Arabian side will continue into the coming days but he’ll be remaining at Bayern Munich unless Al-Nassr’s ban is lifted.
