Agenda 111 projects to be completed by 2024 – Oppong Nkrumah

So far, 88 hospitals under the government’s “Agenda 111” are currently under construction and progressing steadily, since 2021, Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has said.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, cut the sod for the construction of the facilities on August 17, 2021, with a promise to complete the work within 18 months.

The plan to construct the hospitals was first announced in the 8th COVID-19 national address, on April 26, 2020, by the President months after the Coronavirus pandemic hit Ghana.

It was initially “Agenda 88” but government later revised it to “Agenda 111.” The 23 additional facilities included, 13 more district hospitals bringing the total figure to 111.

The standard 100-bed facilities which will be in districts without hospitals will also have accommodation for staff.

Beneficiary regions and respective breakdown are Ashanti, 10, Volta, nine, Eastern, eight, Greater Accra, seven, Upper East, seven, Oti, five, Upper West, five, Bono, five, Western North, five, Savanna, three, Bono East, two, North East, two.

The remaining are six regional hospitals in the newly created regions, two specialised hospitals in the middle and northern belts, as well as a regional hospital in the Western Region and renovation of the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital.

Each unit is supposed to have facilities such as outpatient services, including consultation for medical and surgical cases, ophthalmology, dental and physiotherapy and imaging services.

At a press briefing yesterday at Trede, where the sod-cutting ceremony was held, the Information Minister said “the brief I have is that 88 are currently under construction and it is grouped into eight zones and in those eight zones, you will find 54 projects. We have visited 33 sites so far and we thought that coming to Trede, where it all began, it is important to showcase from Trede all that has gone on so far.”

He noted that some districts had faced challenges in acquiring land for construction, leading to doubts about the government’s commitment to the projects.

“However, the government remains confident that all the hospitals will be completed before the end of President Akufo-Addo’s second term,” he assured.

Mr Nkrumah stated that some of the hospitals which were behind schedule had been terminated.

“We have provided you with the reports of the sites that we have visited so far, the majority of them that are doing well, the few of them that are behind schedule. We have also updated you on the ones that we have had to terminate because they are behind schedule,” he indicated.

Contributing, Dr Anthony Nsiah Asare, the Presidential advisor on Health, assured that there was sufficient funding available for the completion of the projects.

Additionally, he said upon completion, the hospitals would create employment opportunities for nurses and contribute to the overall economic growth of the country.

I took drugs to avoid my ex-husband’s abuse – Actress

Nollywood actress, Etinosa Idemudia has revealed how she had to indulge in illicit substances to avoid the abuses of her estranged husband.

Just so that there would be peace.”

Akufo-Addo’s loose talk cost NPP in Assin North – A Plus

Showbiz personality and political activist Kwame A Plus has passed a harsh verdict on president Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo last outing at a political campaign rally.

He stated in a Facebook post dated June 28 that Akufo-Addo was the cause of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) losing the Assin North by-election, which had been held 24 hours prior.

He referred to a controversial statement the president made at the rally to the effect that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate James Gyakye Quayson was a potential prisoner hence voters should elect the NPP’s Charles Opoku.

Gyakye Quayson, whose ouster by the Supreme Court triggered the by-election won the poll with over 57% of valid votes.

A Plus holds the view that it is time the NPP relegates Akufo-Addo and his close associates to the Jubilee House if the party is really concerned about its electoral fortunes going forward.

His post accompanied with a video of Akufo-Addo’s ‘Quayson is jail bound’ statement read:

“The main reason why NPP lost the Assin North by-election was Nana Akufo Addo’s presence in the constituency and his lose talk at the rally.

“If NPP is serious about breaking the 8 they must ensure that Akufo Addo and his close associates are relegated to the Jubilee House.

“Those who still cheer him up are not the voters you need to break the 8. Majority of the voters you really need are disappointed in Akufo Addo. Don’t be deceive by the “ten ten Ghana, yie yie” people.

“Secondly, don’t listen to people like Ben Epson. It’s an election you are going into, not lotto bingo!”

According to the Electoral Commission’s announcement, James Gyakye Quayson garnered a total of 17,245 votes, representing 57.56% of the total votes cast.

His closest contender, Charles Opoku of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), received 12,630 votes, accounting for 42.15% of the votes.

Bernice Enyonam Sefenu of the Liberal Party Ghana (LPG) secured 87 votes, which represented 0.29% of the overall tally.

The by-election in Assin North was held to fill the parliamentary seat left vacant following a legal battle that questioned Quayson’s eligibility to hold office due to dual citizenship concerns.

Ahead of closed season: Fisherfolks rant over imminent hardship

Fisher folks at the Abrofo Mpoano landing beach adjacent the Cape Coast Castle have ranted over the closure of the sea scheduled for Saturday, July 1.

The livid fishermen and fishmongers, taking a swipe at government and lamenting the economic hardship in the country, said the closed season would worsen their plight.

The closed season is a science-driven government policy which stops all fishing activities on the sea for a period aimed at replenishing the country’s depleting fish stock.

But the fishers said the intervention had yielded no positive results since it was introduced and so it must be cancelled.

A visit to the landing beach Friday saw a lively atmosphere with multitudes jostling one another and scrambling over the relatively fewer catch made by the fishermen.

Most of the bigger canoes had been parked on the beach in compliance with the sea closure.

Every fisherman and fish monger who spoke with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) said they were not prepared for the closed season because they had not made any savings and had no alternative source of living.

For many, they have taken loans from various financial institutions for their business and shuddered the closed season would land them in trouble.

While some of them thought it must be cancelled, other suggested it should be moved to March and April where there was little activity on the sea.

“We are really suffering. This is our only means of survival, but the government does not seem to care about that.

“Any time they close the sea, the fish leave our territory to other places and so we don’t get enough fish when they open it,” a fisher monger, Maame Esi Kruma, said.

A fisherman, Yaw Ntsiful, citing the expensive cost of premix fuel and other factors contributing to the cost of living, said the closed season was uncalled for.

“I spend more than GHS5,000 on premixed fuel alone and mostly come back with nothing. Our creditors are breathing down our necks and we are barely surviving.

So, you can imagine what the closed season will bring upon us,” he said.

“We are yet to receive any support from government for the season. In fact, we will reject it when they bring because it will not change anything,” another fish monger, Ama Bronya, said.

Assin North: You were ‘sleeping and snoring’ in hotels -Yammin jabs NPP officials

National Organizer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) Mr. Joseph Yammin says his party won the Assin North Constituency by-election out of the commitment and sacrifices they made in the constituency.

According to him, at a point, members of the NDC who were assigned to some villages had to pass nights in those villages to enable them to convince people to vote for their candidate James Gyakye Quayson.

“A night before the elections all MPs were assigned to the communities and they slept in those communities. National Executives were assigned to the communities and they slept in the communities. They slept with them in the night, woke up with them in the morning and ate with them.

“That was how the NDC was operating so at the time the NPP officials were snoring in very good air-conditioned hotel rooms, we were in the bush sleeping.” Mr Joseph Yammin said this in an interview with Kumasi-based Pure FM monitored by MyNewsGH.com.

He further revealed that others who were not posted to villages had to sleep in beer bars because there was no hotel accommodation for them.

“There is a beer bar opposite the Melcom building; that was where some members of the NDC were sleeping. We sat there till daybreak and by the time we realize it is already 5 am then we will go back to our designated places”. He revealed

At the end of the by-election in Assin North on June 27, 2023, Mr. Quayson polled 17,245 votes representing 57.56 per cent of the total votes cast to beat Charles Opoku of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and Bernice Enyonam Sefenu of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG).

Charles Opoku polled 12,630 votes representing 42.15 per cent of the total votes cast in the hotly contested by-election while the LPG’s Bernice Enyonam Sefenu polled a paltry 87 votes (0.29%).
