Twitter goes silent on sacked employees in Africa

Former Twitter employees who were based in Ghana say the company has gone silent on all negotiations with their lawyers following the massive layoffs in November last year.

They also say their severance packages have not been paid.

Agency Seven Seven, which is representing the aggrieved former staff members, says Twitter has not communicated with them or the staff since May when negotiations were almost concluded.

The agency says the social media giant, through its legal team, had almost reached an agreement to pay the fired staff members three months’ salaries and repatriation funds for those employed from outside Ghana but it has remained quiet for weeks.

Agency Seven Seven says it is now exploring other ways to proceed. It fears that the lack of a settlement could set a bad precedent for how foreign-based companies treat employees in Ghana.

Twitter opened its only Africa office in Ghana last November and had about a dozen employees but they were then laid off as part of a global staff cull introduced by Elon Musk when he bought the company.

Twitter has not yet responded to the BBC’s request for comment.

Why Ohemaa Mercy publicly honoured her ex-husband

Ghanaian gospel minister, Ohemaa Mercy, has explained reasons for honouring her husband at the launch of the 2023 Tehilah Experience, held at the Movenpic Hotel on July 6, 2023.

In an interview with Zionfelix, the gospel singer expressed that she honoured her husband for holding down the event for a period of eight years.

She explained that her husband deserves every bit of acknowledgement and commendation bestowed on him.

“Yes of course. He deserves it. He was the one holding the event continuously for eight good years. Sometimes I didn’t know he maneuvered his way around it until I took up the mantle. He deserves it,” she maintained.

Touching on claims that her ex-husband is back to working with the ‘Tehila Experience’ team, she said,

“Everybody, all the team members we have worked with, were called upon to come with their ideas. He coming to the launch to even surprise me that he is ready for this, is a plus. I appreciate that, so I have to honour him,” she added.

How Ohemaa Mercy’s husband was honoured at the Tehilah Experience launch

Earlier in a viral video, Ohemaa Mercy was seen expressing her heartfelt appreciation to her ex-husband, Isaac Twum-Ampofo, for his unwavering support in her Tehillah Experience journey.

Ohemaa Mercy revealed that her ex-husband has continuously offered professional assistance to enhance her work, and she remains forever grateful for his contributions.

Speaking at the launch of the 10th edition of Tehillah Experience, she publicly thanked Mr Twum-Ampofo for his massive support over the years.

“I want to say a big thank you to my ex-husband Ike for his massive support over the years. This wonderful man has been there for me and keeps supporting Tehillah Experience,” Ohemaa Mercy expressed her gratitude.

Mr. Twum Ampofo, visibly moved by Ohemaa’s remarks, acknowledged her appreciation with a wave and quietly took his seat, showcasing their mutual respect and shared commitment to the success of the Tehillah Experience.

Ohemaa Mercy and her husband’s silent breakup

In June 2020, there were viral reports that Ohemaa Mercy’s marriage had collapsed.

The ‘Edin Jesus’ hitmaker was reported to have packed her belongings from her matrimonial home two days after her annual Tehilla Experience Concert in August 2019.

Afia Schwarzenegger, one of the individuals who confirmed the news, claimed that Ohemaa Mercy’s husband, Mr. Isaac Twum-Ampofo, was alleged to have cheated on her with some of her backup singers.

“Ohemaa Mercy left her marital home in August two days after her Tehilla Concert. If only the information is correct then coming August will be exactly one year she left her home. The man has claimed lordship over the house. The children were also not allowed to see her, until recently,” Afia Schwarzenegger said in a video released on her YouTube page.

Why Nana Yaw Amponsah didn’t attend GFA Congress in Kumasi

Asante Kotoko recently appointed new representatives to participate in the Ghana Football Association’s 29th Ordinary Congress which was held at the Great Hall in KNUST.

Many had expected the club’s CEO, Nana Yaw Amponsah to represent Kotoko at the Congress but the club elected different people to represent them.

The club chose Henry Ohene Brenya the team manager and Richard Akoto the IT manager to represent the club at the congress.

The decision came as a surprise to many as Nana Yaw Amponsah was expected to represent Kotoko at the Congress.

Explaining the rational behind why Nana Yaw Amponsah absence at Congress, Listowel Mensah who is a close ally of the now-former Kotoko CEO stated that the decision to dissolve the Kotoko board and Nana Yaw Amponsah-led administration team led to the absence.

Speaking on Angel TV, he said, “Growing up we didn’t know Manhyia to take decisions like these. Recently when Dr. Kyei left there was a communique that came. You appointed people to manage the club so after their mandate ended you were supposed to request for a report from them.

“So it is the report that will inform your decision to dissolve or extend their mandate, but here is the case people had to read and hear the news in the media. After all these you want a report from them. Which authority will the person have to put up a report when he has been sacked by Kotoko?

“Such a crucial congress and you elected an IT person and Team Manager to represent the club? The person who took the decision should have exercised his discretion,” Listowel stated.

With the dissolution of the Management board and the Amponsah-led administration, Kotoko is expected to outline a new directive ahead of the start of the new season.
