Bird flu outbreak hits a farm at Denu in Volta

Ho, – The Veterinary Services Directorate of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA) in the Volta Region has confirmed an outbreak of the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza disease, ordinarily known as Bird Flu, in the region.

 

Dr Patrick Adzodzi Akandi, Volta Regional Director of Veterinary Services in a briefing with the Ghana News Agency said a poultry farm at Denu suffered from the outbreak.

 

He said a team from the Regional Directorate visited the farm on Saturday, where the affected birds were culled to forestall further spread and advised the affected farms and and others in the region to mainstream all bio-security measures to stem the spread of the disease.

 

Dr Akandi appealed to the citizens to avoid transporting poultry products across regional and international frontiers in view of the outbreak in neighbouring countries.

 

Dr Sepenyo Djokoto, Deputy Regional Director of Health in-charge of Public Health said the Directorate had intensified its surveillance mechanisms and was assessing the situation on the ground.

 

“We don’t have any first-hand information, we are only responding to the initial alerts about the disease outbreak.”

 

The Ministry of Food and Agriculture announced an outbreak of Bird Flu, in parts of the country as its Veterinary Services Directorate detected the Flu in the Greater Accra, Central and Volta regions.

 

Dr Patrick Abakeh, Director of Veterinary Services Directorate who, disclosed this in a statement at the weekend in Accra said all, seven farms had shown the outbreak of the disease in the affected regions.
