AKROFUOM: The Akrofuom District Assembly is taking decisive action to address the rising issue of drug use, which has been identified as a potential threat to the district’s security if not urgently tackled.
According to Ghana News Agency, Dr. Woode, during a general meeting of the Assembly, highlighted the development of a strategy to combat the increasing trend of drug abuse in the district. The social services sub-committee has been assigned to collaborate with agencies such as the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) and the Pharmaceutical Council to devise methods to prevent the purchase of unprescribed drugs, particularly tramadol.
Dr. Woode expressed concern about the current situation, noting that many young individuals are frequently seen with water bottles containing various drugs. He emphasized the need for immediate intervention to prevent the issue from escalating.
Addressing illegal mining, Dr. Woode mentioned that the Assembly has established an electoral area task force to manage the situation e
ffectively. Illegal mining, especially in water bodies, has been a significant issue in the country, and the Akrofuom District is no exception. The task force, comprising Assembly Members, traditional rulers, unit committee members, and miners, aims to restore order and ensure miners adhere to environmental regulations.
Mr. Emmanuel Obeng, the Presiding Member, underscored the importance of tackling the growing drug use, which he linked to rising criminal activities and school dropouts. He stated that the Assembly plans to enhance public education on the repercussions of drug use in schools as part of their preventative measures.
