Accra: The Electoral Commission has given the Ghana Freedom Party 10 days to nominate a new presidential candidate for the 2024 Election. This follows the passing of the Party's flagbearer, Madam Akua Donkor, on Monday, October 28, 2024. According to Ghana News Agency, the Commission, in a statement signed by Mr. Samuel Tettey, a Deputy Chair in charge of Operations, indicated that this decision was made in accordance with Article 50 (4) of the 1992 Constitution. The statement highlighted that while the 1992 Constitution and the Public Elections Regulations, 2020, C.I. 127, do not clearly outline the processes to follow in the event of a presidential candidate's death, Article 50 (4) provides guidance. It states that "where at the close of nominations, but before the election, one of the candidates dies, a further period of ten days shall be allowed for nominations." The Commission further noted that the printing of presidential ballot papers, which was nearing completion, has been suspended temporarily. Th is step was necessary to accommodate the nomination of a new candidate by the Ghana Freedom Party. Madam Akua Donkor, who was listed as number three on the ballot paper, passed away at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital in Accra following a short illness. She was 72 years old.
