Some 350 World Leaders From 157 Nations With Diplomatic Relations With North or South Korea Attended the August 11-15, Conference

International Leadership Summit Addresses Korean Reconciliation, Religious Freedom, and New Peace Alliances in Africa and the World

UPF International Leadership Summit Addresses Korean Reconciliation, Religious Freedom, and

New Peace Alliances in Africa and the World

Condolences Expressed for late Prime Minister Shinzo Abe

International leaders at the Universal Peace Federation’s (UPF) Summit 2022 and Leadership Conference affirmed their support for global peacebuilding, especially on the Korean Peninsula. Sessions addressed the universal right to religious freedom and called for more education of youth in Africa.

Some 350 world leaders from the 157 nations with diplomatic relations with either North or South Korea attended the August 11-15, 2022, conference, either in person or virtually, at Jamsil Lotte Hotel in Seoul, to discuss “Toward Peace on the Korean Peninsula: Toward a World Culture of Peace.” In his welcoming remarks, UPF Chairman Thomas G. Walsh expressed hope that the focus and vision for peace on the Korean Peninsula could be taken to a broader level, and that “the divided world be reconciled into one humanity and one global culture of peace.”

In addition to calling for peace, the leaders expressed deep condolences for the loss of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. UPF offered a video and floral tribute.

“My grandfather said the one thing people cannot go without is peace,” said Sheikh Mansour Diouf of the Murid Brotherhood in Senegal. “We are supposed to be brothers…” This sentiment was echoed by many of the religious leaders.

Korean reconciliation was a major theme, due to the passion of UPF co-founders, Rev. Dr. Sun Myung Moon and Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon, who were born in what is now North Korea. In 1991, anti-communist Rev. Moon went to Pyongyang to meet communist North Korea leader Kim Il-sung. The two men embraced as brothers and agreed to launch various projects together. That unity underscores the hope to bring peace to the 80 million people on the Korean Peninsula, despite decades of division, said Dr. Michael Jenkins, President, UPF International.

Along with the conference, UPF organized a Fact-Finding Delegation for Peace on the Korean Peninsula with US officials and South Korean leaders. Amb. Joseph DeTrani, Special Envoy to the Six-Party Talks with DPRK (2003-2006); Amb. Harry Harris, a US Navy admiral who served as US Ambassador to South Korea from 2018 to 2021; (Ret.) Gen. Walter Sharp, who led US forces, the UN Command, and ROK-US Combined Forces Command (2008-2011); and Dr. Alexandre Mansourov, Adjunct Professor at the Edmund Walsh School of Foreign Studies at Georgetown University, offered their assessments. (Full details will be available at

“Idealism must be rooted in realism,” said Amb. Harris. He praised South Korea President Suk-yeol Yoon for his intentions “to make the US-ROK Alliance the centerpiece of his foreign policy,” as that means outreach to Japan as well as military readiness.

Former US President Donald Trump, former Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Cambodia Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen, Dr. Sok Siphana, head of Asian Vision Institute, and former Taiwan Vice President Lu Hsiu-lien offered remarks on the need to achieve peace.

Protecting religious freedom worldwide was another major theme. Religious freedom is “the most important single topic on the planet,” said US House Speaker Newt Gingrich (1995-1999). That is because it presupposes God’s existence and God’s bestowing rights to humanity, and this forms the basis of freedom, he explained.

Religious freedom is key to security concerns, added US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo (2018-2021), recalling that he always left his Bible open on his desk for inspiration. “Nations that threaten others, like China and Iran” also “have death holds” on religious freedoms, he noted.

From Japan, lawyer Norishige Kondo of the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification (FFWPU) talked about “a serious crisis of religious freedom in our country.” He spoke of the surreal situation of Japan’s media transferring blame for the brutal assassination of Prime Minister Abe from the shooter to FFWPU. He discussed human rights violations against 4,300 FFWPU members, while FFWPU member Toru Goto talked about his kidnapping, 12-year confinement, and lawsuits against perpetrators.

Hon. Jan Figel, Special Envoy for the Promotion of Freedom of Religion, European Union (2016-2019), noted that while 84% of the world population claims religious affiliation, 79% live in countries “with high or very high obstacles to religious freedom.” Religious prejudice generates three evils—”intolerance, discrimination, and persecution,” said Dr. Massimo Introvigne, Managing Director of the Center for Studies on New Religions in Italy.

A third major highlight was about strengthening peace and prosperity in Africa

The growing power of Africa—where the average age is 20—brings opportunities for education, jobs, encouraging peace, and protecting the environment, especially desertification. “It is imperative for us: We must train our youth so that they can resolutely take charge of their destiny,” said H.E. Brigi Rafini, Executive Secretary of the Community of Sahel and Saharan States (CEN-SAD) and former Prime Minister of Niger.

At an afternoon International Youth Leaders Conference, leaders from Malawi, Nigeria, Eswatini, Cape Verde, Somalia, DR Congo, and Niger discussed the importance of vocational training and character education for African youth. This was followed by the signing of an agreement to raise “youth for peace.”

In a separate session, Imboni Dr. Uzwi-Lezwe Radebe, founder of the Revelation Spiritual Home in South Africa, joined Most Rev. Daniel Okoh, President of the Christian Association of Nigeria; Hon. Issaka Sourwema, Minister of Religious and Customary Affairs of Burkina Faso; H.E. Rev. Nevers Mumba, Founder of the National Christian Coalition in Zambia; and Dr. Nokuzola Mndende, National Chairperson of the Council of African Religion in South Africa, to discuss a resolution to protect religious freedom in Africa. This resolution was subsequently signed.

Other highlights:

—The 40th Anniversary of The Washington Times. Chairman Thomas P. McDevitt, President and Executive Editor Christopher Dolan, and Opinion Editor Charles Hurt spoke of The Times’ impact and its dedication to accurate news and the ideals of freedom, faith, and family.

—The 60th Anniversary of The Little Angels. The world-famous children’s folk ballet company founded by Rev. and Mrs. Moon gave a beautiful special performance to the delight of conference participants.

‘Consider Ho for Metropolitan status’-MCE

Ho, Aug. 15, GNA – Mr. Divine Bosson, Ho Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) has said the city should be considered for elevation to a Metropolitan status.

He said the population of the Volta Regional capital had exceeded the threshold for metropolitan consideration, noting that about 100,000 of its residents were unmarked during the 2021 housing and population census.

The census placed the city’s population at 197,500 and the MCE, who was addressing leaders of the Volta and Oti Chapters of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), who had called on him, said the count missed a sizable chunk.

Mr. Bosson said the unmarked included workers, and the growing student community that were counted elsewhere yet spent critical time in the city, and that the number could not be ignored in development planning.

“About 100,000 of our population were not counted. The student population were on vacation during the census and were not counted here, yet they come back and use everything we have,” the MCE asserted.

“The Municipality is ripe. We are more than a Municipality status and am sure when the President is granting statuses, he will consider us,” he added.

Mr. Bosson noted that the Municipality’s growth showed in the fast-evolving physical landscape, and that the Assembly was working to expand its structures to par.

The Municipality in recent times has witnessed a boom in development with the establishment of the nation’s prime health university and increased local investment drive.

The MCE, who is barely a year into office had attempted a series of successful ambitious city expansion initiatives, opened roads, and led a sustained sanitation effort.

The MCE said encouraging business investment was part of the Assembly’s strategies towards development and would seek to support the enhancement of potential growth areas, which includes the real estate, agriculture, and tourism sectors.

The Municipality would this year hold the maiden Ho Expo, focusing on promoting tourism, real estate, and investment, and which the MCE said would expose the potentials, and help stimulate business and development collaboration among the private sector and other stakeholders.

Mr. Bosson observed that the real estate remained top of the investment chain, especially with the academic community stimulating focus on urban accommodation and hinted on plans to revisit a 200-unit Spanish housing project for the Municipality, aborted preliminarily in 2011.

He said internal revenue was crucial to the city’s ambitions, and that the Assembly had begun a crusade on clogged revenue streams including property rates, 90 per cent of which had never been paid.

The MCE appealed to the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) to mainstream the collection of rent taxes by law to boost revenue streams for government and development purposes.

Mr. Emmanuel Agbaxode, Chairman of the GJA, said the media sought to strengthen development collaboration with the various stakeholders, and assured the Assembly of continuous support.

‘It wasn’t my intention to create this misunderstanding, I apologise’ – Hopeson Adorye

The former NPP Parliamentary candidate for the Kpone-Katamanso constituency, Hopeson Yaovi Adorye has retracted and apologised his widely criticized ethnocentric comments against northerners in the NPP.

A team of Alan Kyerematen loyalists on Saturday, August 13, led by Mr. Adorye hit the streets of the Ashanti regional capital, Kumasi, for a walk dubbed “Aduru wo so.”

Mr. Adorye, addressing the gathering, claimed that the next flagbearership position of the NPP must go to the Busia gate which is Alan Kyerematen and not Dr. Bawumia who is from the Dombo gate.

The NPP stalwart claimed “there is one thing I am going to say. The NPP has a tradition. Our tradition is Busia, Danquah and Dombo. Danquah represents Eastern Region and the bottom (south), Danquah represents Ashanti Region and the Bono areas, while Dombo represents Northern Region.

He continued, “whenever a Danquah leads the party, the Busia side steps aside but there is a Dombo (for a running mate), and whenever a Busia leads, the Danquah side steps aside but there is a Dombo (for a running mate). As for the Dombo’s they are always there (for a running mate).”

Though he initially clarified, the comment has continuously compelled some members of the elephant fraternity (NPP) to fire verbal attacks at him for what they believe to be tribal bigotry against NPP members in the North.

Mr. Adorye has released another statement explaining that his intention was not to discriminate against the Northerners nor to create upheavals or disunity within the party.

Despite still maintaining his stance that his comments had been miscontrued for political mischief by Alan Kyerematen’s opponents, he takes full responsibility for his actions and sincerely called for peace to prevail.

“Upon reflection, I realise that my statement may either have been misunderstood and offended some patriots or deliberately turned around by political opponents for their misguided intentions.

“As much as it is not my nature, it definitely was not my intention to create this misunderstanding,” he stated.

He adds “I take full responsibility for my actions and sincerely apologise to all who are offended.”

Read a copy of his full apology note below:

I refer to a statement I made on Saturday 13th August 2022 following the successful Alan, Aduru Woso Asanteman Health Walk in Kumasi and the ongoing comments on the statement on social media and some news websites.

Upon reflection, I realise that my statement may either have been misunderstood and offended some patriots or deliberately turned around by political opponents for their misguided intentions.

As much as it is not my nature, it definitely was not my intention to create this misunderstanding.

I take full responsibility for my actions and sincerely apologise to all who are offended.

I take this opportunity to state categorically that I am neither an Operations Director for Alan Kyerematen nor aware of any such campaign team created.

Asanteman has spoken, Alan Kyerematen is NPP’s Unifier and the best choice for victory in 2024, and l am at peace with it.
