National Theatre to premier “Ayiyii” production on August 20

Accra,- The National Theatre will on August 20 this year showcase its newest production dubbed “Ayiyii” at its main auditorium in Accra.

This was contained in a statement issued and copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra.

It said “Ayiyii” is a story of a peculiar child with extraordinary characteristics who embarked on an adventurous journey, experiencing and stealing from different cultures, all over Ghana.

It was written by Joyce Bekoe.

Narrating the story, the statement said, “Ayiyii” saw the need to keep learning and expanding his internal bank of knowledge.

“He immerses himself and actively participates in festivals and cultural celebrations wherever he visits. Throughout his journey, he takes considerable ingenuity in thinking, playing, making friends, and finding new ideas,” it said.

The statement said Ayiyii’s level of intelligence and resourcefulness attracted the attention of both the young and old in every community he visited.

“This production is also a display of the richness of the Ghanaian culture. The scenes and acts are created from music, dramatised through movements and dialogues resulting in a whole theatre presentation,” the statement said.

It is a collaborative effort between the National Theatre with its residence groups and a guest artiste who is a Professor, Composer, Multi-instrumentalist, and Ethnomusicologist from the USA, it said.

“It is presented under the auspices of the Ministry of Tourism, Art, and Culture,” the statement added.

Buy cars, houses with the money you make when men ‘chop’ you — Kwame A Plus ‘advices’ Serwaa Amihere

Former Ghanaian musician, social and political activist, A Plus, born Kwame Asare Obeng has advised GhOne TV presenter to use the supposed money she is making from sleeping with big politicians as it is being alleged to acquire properties.

This comes after an anonymous Snapchat account holder made explosive revelations about Serwaa Amihere alleging that she slept with some top executives in the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and also pimping ladies to them for money.

A Plus accused former TV3 presenter and bi-polar ambassador, Abena Korkor of trying to tarnish the image of top media personality, Serwaa Amihere.

‘There are women in this country who are free to sleep with whoever they choose to. They are even free to talk about it openly after smoking some cheap weed.

Then such people turn around to create fake accounts to talk about who is sleeping with who and some fellow women believe and share it with excitement. Which sensible woman will believe or participate in such foolishness!! Women empowerment my trumu!! Agyimifoɔ!!!

@serwaaamihere wo daa da!! When they sleep with men they use the money to buy weed and pretend they have bipolar!! Use yours to buy range and houses. You too it is your own body!!!’

Cp of Nations ‘beacon of hope’ for battered Cameroon economy

The Africa Cup of Nations in January and February is a “beacon of hope” for a Cameroonian economy battered by the coronavirus pandemic and two conflicts, businessmen and traders say.

A sign of depressing times is that only a few merchants populate the once crowded aisles of a handicraft market in coastal city Douala, the economic hub of the central Africa country.

“We first had the Boko Haram crisis in the far north, then the separatist conflict in the English-speaking zone. Covid-19 has finished us,” says Mouhamadou Isolha, president of the Douala craft market.

“We had very complicated months. No more visitors came. We are experiencing something unheard of,” he continues.

“The CAN (Cup of Nations) can change a lot of things with the influx of tourists and spectators.”

In Yaounde and Douala, the largest cities, the 24-nation biennial tournament is eagerly awaited.

Cameroonians are dreaming of an economic upturn and of success for the national team, known as the Indomitable Lions, who have been African champions five times, most recently in 2017.

The economy, which represents more than 40 percent of the GDP of the Central African Economic and Monetary Community, is the most diversified in the region.

But a third of the inhabitants live on less than two euros a day, and the poverty rate is almost 40 percent.

LOWER INVESTMENT

Covid-19 has lowered public and private investment and consumption. According to the World Bank, the worst affected sectors include hotels, restaurants and transport.

Francoise Puene, chief executive of a Yaounde hotel, told AFP: “For us, the CAN is the light at the end of the tunnel.

“We have invested 12 billion francs ($21 million/18 million euros) in the future,” she says as expansion work continues at the four-star establishment.

Cameroon Tours director Alain Pokam says: “A little more than 10 years ago, tourists came back regularly.

“With Boko Haram and the Anglophone crisis, they now have the feeling that everything can change at any time. I hope the CAN will give tourists the desire to come back to Cameroon.”

But economist Dieudonne Essomba believes the “CAN cannot have a strong macroeconomic effect”.

“The stadiums are prestigious investments, but do not have a structural impact on the lives of the people,” he told AFP. “The average Cameroonian needs water, a job, access to healthcare.”

Jean-Michel Nintcheu from the opposition Social Democratic Front party criticised the government of President Paul Biya for creating “a vicious debt” by choosing to host the Cup of Nations.

“We are talking about more than 3,000 billion CFA already granted for this event,” he told AFP, a figure the government has not confirmed.

“We could have used part of this money to support economic operators, build hospitals and schools, invest heavily in agriculture, boost agribusiness and strengthen the supply of (electricity),” he said.

The draw for the tournament takes place in the country on Tuesday.

HOSTIN CUP OF NATIONS ‘IRREVERSIBLE ACHIEVEMENT’ FOR CAMEROON

“We are the champions” resonates in the Olembe Stadium in Yaounde as Cameroon sports minister Narcisse Mouele Kombi enters the main venue for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, surrounded by journalists.

With the January 9 kick-off of the 24-team tournament drawing closer, the government is emphasising that the central African country is set to stage the biennial showcase of African football.

“Cameroon is ready to host the CAN (Cup of Nations),” Mouele Kombi tells AFP, adding that its organisation was “an irreversible achievement”.

Geremi Njitap, a former Cameroon star and now president of the footballers’ union in the country, believes the tournament is a “great opportunity for African football to regain a high level.

“We must develop the local championships and that starts with the development of infrastructure. The players must be well paid,” he told AFP.

Others are more sceptical.
“The CAN will be done. There are no more fears. But at what cost?”, asks Dimitri Mebenga, head of sport for the daily Mutations.

“This tournament will have been a financial abyss for the country and will have made the Cameroonian taxpayer bleed, all in a great opacity.”

Originally chosen as 2019 hosts, Cameroon fell behind with preparations and Egypt had to step in at the last minute and stage the event.

Given a second chance, Cameroon have twice had to change the dates for the 2021 version, that will now be held a year later.

Fears that torrential seasonal rains could wreak havoc with a tight 52-match schedule resulted in the first change, then the coronavirus pandemic caused another delay.

SECURITY CONCERNS

Now, the marquee African football tournament is set to begin at the Olembe Stadium late in the afternoon of January 9 and conclude at the same venue on February 6 with the final.

After work delays, the Olembe Stadium in the Cameroonian capital offers 60,000 seats and an already green pitch.

But as Cameroon prepare to host the Cup of Nations for the first time since 1972, when it was just an eight-team tournament, there are security concerns.

Boko Haram jihadists have launched attacks in the north while there have been clashes between the army and separatists in the two English-speaking regions in the southwest.

Cameroon successfully hosted the African Nations Championship (CHAN), a competition for footballers playing in their homelands, early this year, but controversy continues over infrastructure backlogs.

Media and analysts wonder whether the country will be ready for the January 9 start with Cameroon to feature in the opening match against opponents who will be known after the draw in Yaounde on Tuesday.

Initial plans for the Olembe Stadium included a swimming pool, a gymnasium and tennis courts, but only the stadium seems set to be completed.

An Italian company working on the project since 2015 was replaced at the end of 2019 by one from Canada.

There are red, blue, green, orange and yellow panels on the outer rim of the venue, symbolising the scales of a pangolin, a small mammal dear to Cameroonians.

The total cost of the Olembe project, according to the authorities, is 163 billion CFA francs ($290 million/250 million euros).

Work to be completed includes hotels in Garoua and Bafoussam and roads in Douala, a coastal city and the economic capital.

Fuel prices set to reduce in second half of August – IES

The Institute for Energy Security (IES) has announced that fuel prices in Ghana will see some reduction in the second half of August at the various pumps.

The current national average price of fuel per litre at the pump remains pegged at Gh¢5.97 for both Gasoline and Gasoil on account of the relative price stability.

According to IES, its 15-day rolling basis confirmed that the price of fuel on the local Ghanaian market remained stable within the window under assessment.

It noted that prices of petroleum products within the first pricing-window of August 2021 saw the Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) maintain prices at the pump from the first pricing window of July.

The first pricing-window also saw Zen Petroleum, Benab Oil, Cash Oil, Goodness Oil, Top Oil and Frimps Oil recorded as the OMCs that sold the least-priced fuel on the local market, according to the IES Market-Scan.

Taking into consideration indications on the world market and the cedis performance against foreign currency, IES says prices of fuel in the second window will see a reduction.

“The various change in prices of the commodities on the international market is expected to affect local market prices in Ghana.

“For this window, with the 1.49 percent reduction in the price of the International Benchmark- Brent crude, the 2.17 percent decrease in price of Gasoline, the 1.77 percent decrease in Gasoil price and the marginal depreciation of 0.17 percent of the local currency against the US Dollar; the Institute for Energy Security (IES) projects that price of fuel on the domestic market at the various pumps are set to dip as we enter the second Pricing-Window of August 2021,” part of a release from the IES dated August 15 has said.

IES notes that the downward adjustment may however be offset by the adjustments from the largest local market shareholder, GOIL, TOTAL and Shell.

ACFTA Young Entrepreneurs Federation (AfYEF) commemorated the yearly International Youth Day

AfCFTA Young Entrepreneurs Federation (AfYEF) commemorated the yearly International Youth Day scheduled on 12 August successfully. This year’s event was celebrated virtually via Zoom Conference call witnessing the ardent participation of young entrepreneurs across several African countries including Nigeria, South Africa, Zambia, Ghana, Gambia, Malawi, etc.

The theme for the event was “The Role of the Youth in Promoting the AfCFTA agreement” signed by 54 African countries in Rwanda, 2018. AfYEF believes that this agreement must involve the youth of Africa so that, they can participate in, contribute to and benefit from this Game Changer as GIZ has always described.

During the event, the leadership of AfYEF used the forum to discuss the way forward and how the youth and young entrepreneurs of Africa can play their vital roles in the development of the African Continent through the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Mr. Selorm Kofi Dake (a former Trade Adviser on Infrastructure at the British High Commission (Embassy) in Ghana, a founding member of ADYNE Europe & New Generation Africa; Co-Founder of the Alliance of Young Entrepreneurs (AYE) Ghana who is a Technical Advisor to the Federation, pointed out during his presentation that, in order for the youth to take advantage of the AfCFTA agreement, they must identify a problem in their community and try to solve it through innovative ways and this shall be rewarded by the gains they would make as entrepreneurs in their communities and elsewhere.

He further admonished the participants and all youth of the continent not to base their entrepreneurship spirit on the accumulation of wealth but providing practically innovative solutions to human social needs and this shall be rewarded accordingly.

In supporting this assertion, the president of the federation Mr. Siita Sofo Hissan who is also a sub-chief in Dagbon with the Chieftaincy title Malti-Naa, an author, motivational speaker, entrepreneur, media mogul, banker, and philanthropist indicated that the African youth must cultivate some enviable social values in order to win the confidence and trust of pioneers in the industry as this is the sure way to climb the ladder to reap the “dividend” of entrepreneurship.

The speakers used the forum to also elaborate on the need for wealth to trickle down to the masses since sustainable development cannot be achieved if the masses are poor as characterized in African countries with few rich people controlling resources in any jurisdiction.

Therefore, the duo called on African governments to embark on deliberate effective distributive mechanisms to ensure that the poor majority does not remain the same. Mr. Siita Sofo Hissan cited the looting spree incidence that occurred in South Africa where through an infinitesimal provocation, the poor felt threatened and reacted setting many businesses aback.

In this regard, AfCFTA Young Entrepreneurs Federation is working tirelessly to mobilize the youth and young entrepreneurs in Africa so that they can actively participate in, contribute to and benefit from the AfCFTA agreement as the future is theirs.

Later in the day, the South African Rep for AfYEF Mr. Mordecai Sizolwenkosi Ndlovu held another forum with the Secretariat of AfYEF led by the President to discuss how the youth can participate in, benefit from the AfCFTA agreement. From this, it is evident that the youth of Africa are really lacing their boots for the agreement.

It is crucial to also state that, participants from across Africa were excited about the call to action and the in-depth knowledge of their leadership on the issues limiting the African progress and their participation in global trade.

The African youth have chosen to refuse any potential failures of AfCFTA knowing its importance and hence they seek to build a strong representative voice to recommend the environment needed for enterprises to thrive.
