Oympic Games: Farewell and thanks, Tokyo. Bonne chance et bienvenue à Paris

Kenya’s Eliud Kipchoge produced a marathon masterclass, and the USA edged China at the top of the Tokyo Olympics medals table as the curtain fell on the biggest global sports event since the Covid pandemic began. The Olympic flag will now pass to 2024 hosts Paris.

After Kipchoge’s marathon win for Kenya, the United States scored victories in volleyball, track cycling and basketball to top the medals table with 39 golds, just one ahead of China.

Marathon world record holder Kipchoge showed his class, kicking in the closing stages and clocking 2hr 08min 38sec to retain the title he won in 2016.

The 339th and final gold medal went to Serbia’s men’s water polo team, capping a Games that were in serious danger of cancellation after they became the first postponed Olympics last year.

Thirty-three sports have been contested across 16 days in largely empty stadiums, with fans barred because of coronavirus risks and athletes living in strict biosecure conditions.

“Some were already speaking of ‘Ghost Games’,” Olympics chief Thomas Bach told an International Olympic Committee session ahead of the closing ceremony on Sunday.

“What we have seen here is that on the contrary the athletes have brought soul to the Olympic Games.”

Performances break down Japanese resistance

The Olympics were plagued by low Japanese support over fears they would become a super-spreader event, but officials maintained that a record haul of 27 gold medals, putting Japan third on the table, has won hearts.

“We believe our athletes’ earnest spirit and all-out performance moved people,” said Tsuyoshi Fukui, chef de mission for the Japanese team.

France finished in eighth position, with 10 gold medals, 33 in all.

Sunday’s closing ceremony got underway at an Olympic Stadium empty of spectators, rounding off an extraordinary Games conducted mostly for a worldwide TV audience of billions.

In the course of the ceremony, Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo received the Olympic flag and with it, the responsibility of hosting the next edition of the world’s greatest sporting show.

‘I hate it when people lie’ — Actress Henshaw

Nollywood seasoned actress, Kate Henshaw, has been venting about movie practitioners who go about backstabbing and disrespecting others with lies.

In her recent tweets, a clearly upset Henshaw stated that the industry consists of individuals willing to betray colleagues for selfish reasons. However, she has maintained a clean slate by being professional.

“In an industry like mine, there are some who will stab you in the back just for the chance to be given a meal but I have always prided myself in being 100% professional. It took me years and no daughter of eve will tarnish it…,” the actress tweeted.

“I hate it when people lie and there is a cover up because if it was true, you would stand with your full chest and own it and provide proof.”

Kate is one of Nigeria’s celebrated actresses with huge following. She didn’t give reasons behind the statement but it has heightened speculations that she may be having a rift with one of her colleagues.

Yu’re a pimp – Efia Odo jabs Victoria Lebene over #FixTheCountry Comment

Efia Odo who is a key figure in the #FixTheCountry protest has been firing shots at actress and media personality, Victoria Lebene for a cryptic post she is made about #FixTheCountry advocates.

Victoria wrote, “Don’t say fix and not fix yourself! Change starts with us, the youths. The old folks will leave, and when we hold the fort, we will account for everything we do! COURSE- Means the Direction, Route, Way, the journey! read, and research things before your comment. THANKS!

She further asked models and youth who are taking part in the campaign to dress appropriately, a comment many thought was targeted at Efia Odo.

But Efia in a response seemed to be asking Victoria to hush it, because she is not clean.

According to her, Lebene should not think her sins have been covered because she is now married as she is a pimp whose ‘whoreness’ has not been deleted because of marriage.

“Lol, you’re married now so you think you’re decent? Lmaooo, you forgot when you tried to “hook” me up, and I told you I don’t do hookups? Talking bout he will give me $2k. Bitch you was selling pussy and tried to make me sell mine, but now you’re married, so you’re decent,” Efia Odo blasts.

Afia Schwarzenegger ‘blasts’ ‘#FixTheCountry celebrities

Afia Schwarzenegger is ‘dragging’ celebrities who were pivotal in tweeting about #FixTheCountry social media campaign but failed to come out to the streets when they were needed to demonstrate.

According to her, they are “cowards and are not bold and fearless as they claim.”

“Here in Ghana if you have somebody who is bold and fearless like me Afia Schwarzenegger who when I speak I back my words with action then you should thank God. If you have people like Ernest Kofi Owusu Bempah, Blakk Rasta and Country Man Songo, you should thank God. When you were running your mouths on social media: #FixTheCountry, how many of you showed up for the demonstration? Cowards,” she said in an Instagram video.

On Wednesday August 4, 2021, a number of Ghanaian youth took to the street to participate in the much-publicised #FixTheCountry protest. This was after months of social media campaign.

The demonstrators demanded among other things a new constitution and steps to address the many challenges facing the ordinary Ghanaian.

However majority of big name celebrities who joined the hashtag campaign on social media were conspicuously missing in the street activity.

Afia alleged that they claimed they were not assured of their security. She said they were scared of being shot and so she rained vulgar words on them.
