Nairobi: The Project Director of Zoomlion Kenya, Dr. Peter Dagadu, has announced that the company is making significant progress barely a month after commencing operations in Nairobi under the city's integrated waste management programme.
According to Ghana News Agency, Dr. Dagadu made the announcement during a working visit by Kenya's Majority Leader, Kimani Ichung'wah, to the Zoomlion head office in Nairobi. Dr. Dagadu explained that the company was working closely with city authorities to deliver an end-to-end waste management solution aimed at improving sanitation, environmental conditions, and public health across the city.
Dr. Dagadu outlined Zoomlion's plan to transform Nairobi's waste management system through emergency clean-up operations, infrastructure development, and long-term sustainability measures. He disclosed that, prior to the company's intervention, Nairobi had approximately 109 illegal dumpsites posing environmental and public health risks.
The company has undertaken a large-scale legacy waste evacuation exercise, clearing and transporting accumulated waste from illegal dump sites to the designated disposal facility at the Dandora Dumpsite. Zoomlion is also enhancing the dumpsite's infrastructure, including upgrading internal access roads and reorganising tipping operations, to improve traffic flow and operational efficiency.
Since beginning operations on March 27, 2026, Zoomlion has evacuated over 55,000 tonnes of waste from various city locations, surpassing previous evacuation capacities. As part of its long-term strategy, Zoomlion plans to implement a modern secondary waste collection system across Nairobi, supported by the construction of four zonal transfer stations to enhance waste consolidation and transportation efficiency.
Furthermore, the company is preparing to develop a 3,600-tonne-per-day waste processing and resource recovery facility at Ruai, set to be operational by the end of November 2026. This facility will support recycling, composting, and other resource recovery activities, reducing landfill dependence and promoting circular economy principles.
Dr. Dagadu emphasized the program's inclusivity, engaging stakeholders like informal waste sector actors, community groups, and existing waste management operators to ensure sustainable implementation and shared economic opportunities. Mr. Kimani Ichung'wah praised the partnership as a positive example of intra-African collaboration and investment, highlighting the shift towards homegrown solutions and partnerships within the continent.
Mr. Ichung'wah assured that Kenya is open to collaborating with partners providing technical capacity and sustainable public service solutions. Earlier, Apostle Dr. Eric Nyamekye encouraged Zoomlion Kenya staff to remain dedicated and united for long-term success, advising on competence and moral integrity in recruitment and leadership.
The event was attended by the Executive Chairman of the Jospong Group, Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong, and other management members of the Group.
