Tamale: Ya-Na Abukari II, Overlord of Dagbon Traditional Area, in consultation with relevant stakeholders and security agencies, has cancelled this year’s celebrations of the Fire Festival in Tamale and its environs. This decision was announced through a press statement from the Gbewaa Palace, signed by Alhaji Abdul-Rahaman Mohammed, Secretary to the Gbewaa Palace.
According to Ghana News Agency, the decision comes in response to emerging tensions among certain factions in the area and is aimed at safeguarding peace, unity, and the safety of all citizens. The Fire Festival, known locally as ‘Bugum Chugu’, is a significant cultural event celebrated by Dagombas and other ethnic groups in the Northern Region.
The statement highlighted that this year’s Fire Festival, scheduled for Saturday, July 05, will still be observed in other parts of the region except for the Greater Tamale Metropolis. While acknowledging the festival’s cultural importance, the statement emphasized that the primary concern is maintaining harmony and preventing any activities that might escalate existing tensions.
The appeal was made to all traditional leaders to communicate the decision to their communities and support efforts to ensure calm and order during this period. Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant, cooperative, and steadfast in upholding peace, which is vital for the area’s progress and wellbeing.
The statement concluded by expressing hopes that the Fire Festival would resume in the near future under more peaceful circumstances.
