Accra: Today marks World Bipolar Day, a global observance dedicated to raising awareness and understanding of bipolar disorder, a mental health condition affecting millions worldwide. Bipolar disorder is characterized by significant shifts in mood, energy, and activity levels, ranging from periods of extremely elevated mood, known as mania, to episodes of deep depression. According to Ghana News Agency, these changes could disrupt one's daily life, relationships, and the ability to work or function effectively. Globally, an estimated 37 million people - about one in every 200 individuals - are living with bipolar disorder. It is recognized as one of the leading causes of disability, underscoring the urgent need for improved mental health services and support systems. The WHO noted that despite its prevalence, many people with bipolar disorder are either misdiagnosed or do not receive appropriate care. Stigma surrounding mental health remains a major barrier, preventing individuals from seeking help and acce ssing treatment. Health experts emphasize that while bipolar disorder presents serious challenges, including a higher risk of suicide, frequent co-occurrence with other health conditions, and a reduced life expectancy by up to 13 years, it is treatable. They explained that with the right combination of medical care, psychological support, and social understanding, individuals living with bipolar disorder could lead full and meaningful lives. Stakeholders have called for increased investment in mental health care, improved public education, and stronger community support systems to address gaps in diagnosis and treatment. 'As the world observes this important day, the message remains clear: 'mental health matters. Greater awareness, compassion, and access to care could transform lives and help break the silence surrounding bipolar disorder,' the statement added.
