Wontumi to Experience Improved Prison Conditions with Increased Feeding Grant – Anthony

Accra: The Press Secretary at the Ministry of the Interior, Julius Kwame Anthony, has announced that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, will benefit from improved prison conditions due to a government decision to raise the daily feeding grant for inmates from GH?1.80 to GH?5.00. According to Ghana Web, Anthony shared these updates during an interview on Joy Prime, explaining that the increase is part of broader reforms intended to enhance the welfare of prisoners and improve the conditions within Ghana's correctional facilities. He emphasized that the adjustment is not specific to any individual, but a part of the government's broader commitment to inmate welfare. Anthony further noted that during the administration of President John Dramani Mahama and under the leadership of Interior Minister Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, prisoners were allocated a daily feeding amount of GH?1.80. The recent increase to GH?5.00 is a testament to the gover nment's efforts to address the longstanding concerns regarding the conditions of inmates. In addition to the increased feeding grant, the Interior Ministry's spokesperson highlighted new legislative measures being implemented to tackle prison overcrowding, such as the passage of the Community Service Bill. This initiative is expected to create more space in correctional facilities, thereby improving the overall living conditions for inmates. "We have passed a Community Service Bill with the aim of decongesting the prisons. The decongestion will ensure that there is much more space for inmates while improving overall conditions within the facilities," Anthony explained. He also clarified that these reforms are designed to benefit all individuals in lawful custody, not just Chairman Wontumi, emphasizing that the government is committed to ensuring improved conditions for all prisoners. The enhanced feeding grant and other initiatives are part of a comprehensive prison reform agenda.
