Accra: Lawyer and NPP member Kwesi Botchway Jnr says Chairman Wontumi's legal team has identified about 20 grounds on which they intend to challenge his conviction and sentencing. Speaking on Joy Prime, on July 25, 2026, he said he had met with Chairman Wontumi's lawyer, Leonard Samoah, who was preparing to file a notice of appeal.
According to Ghana Web, Botchway Jnr highlighted that one of the main issues to be addressed in the appeal is the interpretation of constitutional provisions. He emphasized that the authority to interpret constitutional matters lies solely with the Supreme Court. "It is settled law and a matter of constitutional jurisprudence that the obligation or jurisdiction to interpret provisions, statutes, and other laws is the sole preserve of the Supreme Court under Article 130 of the Constitution," he stated.
Botchway Jnr further noted that the legal team is confident in their grounds for appeal and aims to file the notice soon. He expressed optimism about the proceedings, indicating that the notice of appeal would be lodged at the Court of Appeal by Monday. The appeal is expected to challenge the current interpretation of constitutional issues involved in Chairman Wontumi's case.
