Accra: Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has announced that preparations for the rollout of the government's flagship Women's Development Bank are well advanced. She made this disclosure while speaking at the 65th End-of-Year Gathering and General Meeting of the Greater Accra Markets Association (GAMA).
According to Ghana Web, a two-day workshop has already been convened to finalise key implementation strategies for the initiative. Professor Opoku-Agyemang emphasized that the aim is not speed for its own sake, but sustainability and impact. She expressed determination to progressively build and deliver a mandate that benefits those who have been left in the gaps of the economic system, highlighting the importance of the bank for market women.
The Vice President acknowledged the critical role market women play in sustaining families and communities, noting that markets thrive on the strength and resilience of these women. She stressed that peace, stability, and community resilience often begin with women, and their contribution to national development is significant.
She further addressed the challenging conditions under which many market women work, emphasizing the need for improved environments. Professor Opoku-Agyemang remarked that market women deserve to work with dignity, safety, and peace, which has led to accelerated infrastructure development, including market revitalisation projects.
Additionally, she commended the Greater Accra Markets Association for adopting a theme that promotes healthy living, indicating that economic empowerment must align with personal well-being. The Vice President's comments highlight the government's commitment to supporting market women and enhancing their working conditions.
