Kpando: The Kpando Circuit Court has sentenced a 31-year-old woman, Stella Amedzorme, to three years' imprisonment for abducting an eight-month-old baby at the Kpando Market in the Volta Region.
According to Ghana Web, the conviction followed Amedzorme's guilty plea when she appeared before the court on August 3, 2026. This plea came after thorough investigations were conducted by the Volta North Regional Police Command, shedding light on the circumstances surrounding the abduction.
A Police statement issued on August 5, 2026, detailed the incident that took place on July 17, 2026. On that day, the child's mother, 21-year-old Gloria Xagbe, entrusted her eight-month-old son to Amedzorme, a fellow trader at the market, while she stepped away briefly to purchase packaging bags. Upon her return, both Amedzorme and the baby were missing, prompting Xagbe to report the incident to the Police immediately.
The statement further explained that acting on intelligence, the Police were able to locate and arrest Stella Amedzorme on July 18, 2026, in Toviate, a suburb of Kwamekrom in the Oti Region. The baby was rescued unharmed during the operation.
Investigations revealed that Amedzorme had taken the child under the instructions of her fianc©, who is currently at large. The Police have expressed their determination to apprehend him to assist further in their investigations.
Initially arraigned on July 20, 2026, Amedzorme was remanded into Police custody. Upon her return to court on August 3, 2026, she pleaded guilty and subsequently received a three-year prison sentence.
The Police noted that their successful rescue of the infant was a significant outcome, and efforts are being made to capture Amedzorme's fianc©. The Volta North Regional Police Command reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives, particularly those of children, and called on parents and guardians to remain vigilant.
