Wenchi: Residents of the Akonkontiwam Electoral Area in the Wenchi Municipality have appealed to the government to improve the area's poor drainage system to address recurring flooding.
According to Ghana News Agency, the residents reported that one person lost his life while three children were rescued during a recent flooding incident in the area. The flooding has been attributed to abandoned construction works on a drainage project in the community.
The poor drainage system has led to floodwaters entering homes whenever it rains, causing fear and hardship among residents. Mr. Michael Asante, a Unit Committee Member, noted that the situation has created a large gutter in the area, posing a danger to residents, particularly children.
The community has reported the issue to the Wenchi Municipal Assembly and the Wenchi Traditional Council, but no action has been taken. Madam Afia Kyereh, a resident, voiced her concerns about the frequent flooding of homes and appealed for government intervention.
Another resident, Opanin Kwadwo Mensah, urged the Wenchi Municipal Assembly to remove buildings and structures constructed on waterways to improve drainage and prevent disasters. He warned that failure to address the drainage challenges could result in a major disaster and called for urgent action from the Assembly.
