Wenchi: Mr Kwasi Bonsu, a contractor, has been elected as the Wenchi constituency chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Bono Region. Popularly known in political circles as 'Alatuba', Mr Bonsu garnered 528 valid votes, unseating the incumbent chairman Mr Awudu Ali, who received 248 votes. Mr Richard Kwadwo Adu, another strong contender, obtained 403 votes.
According to Ghana News Agency, the election was conducted and supervised by the Electoral Commission (EC) and took place at the Wenchi Jubilee Park over the weekend. The constituency elections in Wenchi featured 27 candidates vying for the positions of constituency executives within the NPP party.
Mr Jabiru Mohamed secured the First Vice Chair position with 782 votes, surpassing his only rival, Mr Sualiu Bamba, who earned 389 votes. The Second Vice Chair position was claimed by Mrs Comfort Asamoah, a former constituency women's organizer, who received 434 votes, defeating Asare Gyasi, Ebenezer Kwadwo Gyan, and Francisca Gyamaa, who received 249, 282, and 214 votes respectively.
Mr Abdul Rahman Suwaari Ibrahim, the current constituency secretary, retained his position with 677 votes against his only challenger, Mr Joseph Yaw Mensah, who polled 504 votes. Mr Richmond Abrefah Agyemang won the Assistant Secretary position with 666 votes, beating Mr Amos Kofi Osei and Mr Gabriel Gyasi Yeboah, who received 324 and 190 votes respectively.
For the Women Organiser slot, Mrs Dorothy Agyeiwaa, the Assembly Member for Akonkontiwam Electoral Area, secured the position with 651 votes, defeating Mrs Millicent Kyeremaa, who garnered 526 votes. The Constituency Organizer position went to Mr Richmond Sarfo with 478 votes, surpassing Mr Simon Kyeremeh, Mr James Kwasi Oduro Asare, and Mr Idris Mahama, who received 265, 242, and 190 votes respectively.
Mr Stephen Ahenakwa secured the Constituency Youth Organizer position with 504 votes, defeating Alhaji Yakubu Watirigi and Mr Williams Effah, who polled 373 and 304 votes respectively. The Constituency Treasurer position was won by Mrs Rabiatu Abdulai, who amassed 639 votes against her sole contender, Mr John Kwaakye Ameyaw, who had 540 votes.
Incumbents Yakubu Dauda and Hannatu Uthman were elected unopposed as the Nasaara Organizer and Communication Officer. A total of 1,185 delegates from 148 polling stations spread across 29 electoral areas were expected to participate in the constituency elections.
