Weija-gbawe: Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Weija-Gbawe, Felix Odartey Lamptey, has attributed the severe flooding in parts of the municipality to the lack of prior notice before the spillage of the Weija Dam. Speaking on Adom FM's Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Lamptey expressed concerns over the Ghana Water Company Limited's failure to inform the Municipal Assembly in advance, which left local authorities unprepared to manage the situation effectively or alert residents in a timely manner.
According to Ghana Web, the MCE explained that while previous years had witnessed better coordination and early warning systems among stakeholders, this year was different. The spillway was opened on the evening of May 27, 2026, but the volume of water that flowed into the communities was beyond expectations, quickly submerging homes in low-lying areas. Mr. Lamptey noted the sudden rise of water to levels that were not anticipated, resulting in significant damage to property, including submerged cars and homes.
In response to the flooding, emergency measures have been implemented. Small boats and vehicles have been deployed to evacuate affected residents and transport them to safer locations, such as churches. Furthermore, Assembly Members under the Weija-Gbawe Municipal Assembly have been assigned to coordinate evacuation and relief efforts, ensuring that displaced families receive the necessary support and assistance during this challenging time.
