Kumasi: Some residents in the Kumasi Metropolis locked themselves indoors to evade arrest when a sanitation enforcement team from the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), backed by military personnel, inspected homes over poor sanitation.
According to Ghana Web, a video showed the taskforce moving from house to house to inspect compounds as part of efforts to enforce sanitation regulations. At one residence, the occupants refused to open the door despite repeated calls from the security personnel. One of the military officers, who stood outside a window, urged the residents to come out, stating that they could not remain inside forever. Despite the insistence, the occupants stayed hidden.
Eventually, one occupant emerged, demanding a search warrant before allowing entry. The officers clarified that they were conducting an official sanitation exercise on behalf of the KMA and dismissed the request for a warrant. The young man was then questioned about the unclean condition of the compound. He explained that he had been away from the house for some time and was unaware of the state of the surroundings.
The operation resulted in the arrest of several sanitation offenders across the metropolis. However, some residents resisted, claiming ignorance of the sanitation rules and stating they had not heard prior public announcements about maintaining clean surroundings or facing sanctions.
The initiative, part of a broader effort to improve sanitation, highlights ongoing challenges in enforcing cleanliness regulations in urban areas.
