Watch as President Mahama Conducts Aerial Inspection of Flood-Hit Areas in Accra

Accra: President John Dramani Mahama conducted an aerial inspection of flood-hit areas in the nation's capital, Accra, following the heavy downpour from Sunday, June 28, 2026, to Monday, June 29, 2026.

According to Ghana Web, a video of the inspection showed President Mahama observing homes, companies, lorry parks, and streets submerged under water in vast areas of Accra, including Circle and the Weija area. At times, the president was seen pointing out structures obstructing floodwater, which he suggested needed removal.

The president was accompanied by key appointees, including the Minister for Works and Housing, Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, the Director-General of Ghana's National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Dr Joseph Bikanyi Kuyon, and Deputy Chief of Staff Stan Dogbe, who also chairs the government's Anti-Flood Taskforce.

After the inspection, President Mahama remarked that while records show a significant increase in rainfall in Accra, the floods are also partly due to human factors, such as building on waterways and blocking drains with refuse. He announced plans to convene a National Security meeting to address the issue, directing local government authorities to identify channel blockages in affected areas.

He emphasized that a long-term solution involves decongesting Accra by relocating major government departments to other areas.
