Nkawie: A 21-year-old washing bay attendant has been remanded into police custody by the Nkawie Circuit Court for allegedly stealing GHS46,306.90 from his friend and utilizing the funds for betting activities.
According to Ghana News Agency, the accused, Dominic Fordjour, pleaded not guilty to the charge of stealing and is set to reappear before the court on June 15, 2026. The case, presided over by Mr. Robert Addo, heard from Police Chief Inspector Anthony Ohene Gyan, who is prosecuting the case. Inspector Gyan detailed that the complainant, Bernard Kyei, an electrical welder, and the accused were friends residing in Afari, near Nkawie in the Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipality.
The prosecutor recounted that approximately six months ago, Fordjour had accompanied Kyei to open a savings account at the Nkawie branch of GCB Bank, where the amount of GHS46,306.90 was initially deposited. Later, when Kyei decided to set up a mobile money account, he sought Fordjour's assistance. During this process, Fordjour reportedly advised Kyei to use '1957' as his security code.
Chief Inspector Gyan revealed that on May 25, 2026, Kyei discovered the entire sum missing when he visited the bank to make a withdrawal and found his account had a zero balance. An account statement indicated that the entire amount had been withdrawn through a mobile money transaction. Suspecting his friend, Kyei reported the matter to the Nkawie Police, resulting in Fordjour's arrest.
According to the prosecution, Fordjour admitted in his caution statement that he had been withdrawing money in installments from Kyei's bank account into his mobile money wallet as needed. These withdrawals eventually totaled GHS46,306.90, which Fordjour confessed to spending entirely on betting activities. Following these findings, Fordjour was charged with stealing and brought before the court.
