This change aims to establish a lasting identity for the tournament that transcends shifts in political and administrative leadership. The goal is to create an enduring platform to foster football development within the region.
Mr. Gunu emphasized that the primary objective of the Volta Cup is to identify, groom, and expose young footballers with the potential to compete on national and international stages. He highlighted the economic impact football can have, noting that successful players could become significant contributors to their families and communities.
The competition, set to begin at the Ho Sports Stadium on August 15, will feature Under-19 players, unlike the previous edition, which included senior players. This shift aims to enhance talent development and increase opportunities for international scouting. Exceptional players will have the chance to travel to Portugal in November for trial matches, providing them with exposure to international football.
Mr. Gunu also revealed a long-term vision where players from the Volta Cup could represent Ghana in major international competitions, including the FIFA World Cup. The organizers plan to monitor the players closely, aiming for some to secure professional opportunities abroad or earn positions in the national senior team, the Black Stars.
Mr. Daniel Agbogah, Chairman of the Volta RFA, stated that the organizers have developed a comprehensive program to ensure lasting benefits for participants and create a sustainable legacy for football development in the region. The inaugural edition of the Volta Cup will serve as a test case, with improvements planned as the program evolves.
The immediate focus is on selecting a strong Volta Under-19 team to compete in the national Under-19 tournament, which Mr. Agbogah described as a vital opportunity to evaluate the region's young talents. Over 80 players have already been chosen based on their performances in the regional league, with the competition structured on a knockout basis across eight zones.
Players who excel will be selected for the regional Under-19 team to participate in the national Under-19 Elite Championship. Mr. Agbogah expressed confidence that the collaboration between the Regional Coordinating Council and the RFA would establish a structured pathway for young footballers in the region to advance to professional and international levels.
