Videos Surface of Final Moments of Ghanaian Student Who Died in China

Accra: Video footage capturing the final moments of Ghanaian student Mercy Yaaba Bredu, who died in China two days after travelling from Ghana, has surfaced. Mercy, a former Vice President of the Association of Students of English (ASSENS) at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), had travelled to China to further her education and explore opportunities.

According to Ghana Web, Mercy left Ghana on Monday, August 24, 2026, and was seen off at the Accra International Airport by friends and family. Her flight reportedly departed at about 1:30 p.m. During the journey, she reportedly complained of heart pain before her condition worsened after arriving in China.

In one of the videos sighted, Mercy is seen at the Accra International Airport with some family members shortly before boarding her flight to China. She appeared happy and full of energy as she bid farewell to her loved ones, saying, 'Hello, bye-bye. I will miss you.' Another video captures her arrival at an airport in China, where she had collapsed and was struggling to breathe. Some Chinese nationals and airport officials were seen attending to her and helping her regain consciousness.

After regaining consciousness, Mercy appeared weak as several people gathered around her to offer assistance. She was later taken to a hospital for further medical attention. Despite efforts to save her, Mercy died on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, just two days after leaving Ghana.

Mercy was a first-class student and served as Vice President of ASSENS at UEW in 2024.
