Accra: Vice President Professor Jane Naana OpokuAgyemang paid a courtesy visit to the Ministry of Sports and Recreation to ascertain developments in the sector as part of her ongoing tour of selected ministries after one year in office. She was received by Mr. Kofi Iddie Adams, the Minister of Sports and Recreation, who expressed his elation over the visit, noting that it would motivate the ministry to further contribute to the government's reset agenda.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Adams presented an overview of the achievements since the administration took office, including hosting major international tournaments, winning medals across several sports, and securing Ghana's qualification for the 2026 World Cup. The Minister emphasized the need for increased investment in sports infrastructure, mobilization of financial support ahead of the 2026 World Cup, and timely release of funds.
He also updated the Vice President on the progress toward operationalizing the Sports Fund, stating that a board would be inaugurated on Friday to help address long-standing funding challenges in sports. Prof. OpokuAgyemang highlighted the engagement's aim to strengthen cooperation between her office and the ministry.
She assured the ministry of open communication, emphasizing the importance of collaboration, especially in the preparation of bills. Prof. OpokuAgyemang expressed interest in measures taken to improve athlete welfare and safety, stressing that individuals should not suffer due to their chosen discipline.
The Vice President welcomed progress on operationalizing the Sports Fund and encouraged the ministry to explore multiple revenue streams. She commended the Ministry for enhancing Ghana's international image through sports and highlighted the sector's role in projecting the country globally.
