Accra: Veronica Abla Adika made history at age 25 by becoming the first female bank manager in Ghana, overseeing the operations of the Makola branch of the Ghana Commercial Bank (GCB). Her groundbreaking appointment marked a pivotal shift in Ghana's banking sector, which was predominantly led by men at the time.
According to Ghana Web, Adika shared her journey in the banking industry during a conversation with Kafui Dey. She joined the bank at 23 and rose to the position of branch manager within two years, under the leadership of the then Managing Director, TO Asare. Adika recalled that Asare personally informed her about her promotion as part of an initiative to elevate women to leadership roles in the post-independence era.
Adika recounted her conversation with Asare, highlighting his commitment to advancing women in the sector. She remembered his words: "If we are an independent nation, the women also must not lag behind. They should move in tandem with the male." She accepted the managerial role confidently, asserting her readiness to take on the responsibility.
After receiving her transfer letter, Adika immediately stepped into her new role by collaborating with the outgoing manager to ensure a smooth transition. Reflecting on this moment, she expressed her confidence and determination to succeed.
Now 88 years old, Veronica Adika enjoys what she terms a "simple life," reflecting on her pioneering role in Ghana's economic landscape.
