Tema: The Volta Aluminium Company (VALCO) recorded a revenue of over $120 million as of December 2025, its Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Robert Sambian has disclosed. Dr. Sambian revealed these financial figures during a visit by Labour, Jobs and Employment Minister, Dr. Rashid Pelpuo, to the company's facility on February 26, 2026.
According to Ghana Web, Dr. Pelpuo's visit was part of a broader initiative to understand conditions at state enterprises, including employment and safety standards. VALCO currently employs 800 workers, and the minister met with management and the local workers' union to discuss these critical issues. Dr. Pelpuo emphasized the importance of government intervention in determining the growth or contraction of companies, citing an unnamed company where employment dropped from 2,000 to 1,200 workers due to government policies.
Dr. Pelpuo highlighted VALCO as a key investment hub that could drive economic growth with adequate government support. He linked the visit to Ghana's recent economic strides, noting that good governance had improved the country's ranking among Africa's richest nations from number 10 to number 8 within a year. The minister criticized past governance practices where public funds went missing, citing significant unaccounted amounts for infrastructure projects and imports.
VALCO was established under President Kwame Nkrumah's vision for an integrated aluminum industry, with construction starting in 1964 and commercial production commencing in 1967. Initially, the company produced 120,000 metric tonnes annually, with capacity expansions in 1970 and 1974. However, financial difficulties in 2004 led to the Government of Ghana acquiring full ownership from Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Corporation. Since 2011, VALCO has operated at reduced capacity, producing around 40,000 metric tonnes per year.
During the visit, Dr. Pelpuo aimed to assess VALCO's operations and identify the necessary support to enhance its production capacity. He questioned how the company could be helped to function optimally within Ghana's economic framework, ensuring financial sustainability and workforce welfare.
