Bolgatanga: The Upper East Regional Police Command has successfully apprehended four individuals suspected of being involved in a series of armed robberies, with one suspect tragically losing his life during a follow-up operation to recover weapons.
According to Ghana News Agency, the arrests took place on May 5, 2026, as part of an intelligence-driven operation in Bolgatanga, situated within the Upper East Region. The apprehended suspects have been identified as Abdulai Ibrahim, Amadu Rahman, Amadu Sulemana, known by his alias Saaga, and Adu Yakubu.
Police investigations revealed that the suspects had convened at Gbane, a mining locality in the Talensi District, having traveled from Yagaba and Fumbisi, allegedly to execute a planned robbery. During this operation, the suspects reportedly seized four motorbikes and numerous mobile phones.
The suspects, upon interrogation, confessed to multiple robberies in the Talensi District, particularly along the Yagaba-Fumbisi road and the Yagaba-Nanguruma road in the North East Region. Additionally, they admitted to a robbery at the Vikandi Phone Shop in Bolgatanga on March 22, 2025. This incident was notably caught on video, capturing armed men brandishing an AK-47 assault rifle.
Further admissions by the suspects pointed to several robbery incidents at mining sites in Gbane, where they allegedly stole gold and significant sums of money from their victims. They subsequently directed police to a farm near Biung, close to Gbane, where the supposed gang leader, Amadu Rahman, had stashed an AK-47 rifle.
The search in the specified area resulted in the recovery of the rifle, identified by serial number 68100563, along with 87 rounds of live ammunition, all of which were found hidden in a fertiliser sack. During the weapon recovery operation, suspect Amadu Rahman collapsed unexpectedly and was transported to the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital, where he was declared dead upon arrival.
Police have stated that Rahman's body is currently preserved at the hospital morgue pending an autopsy. Meanwhile, the three remaining suspects remain in police custody and are scheduled to appear before the court.
