Enchi: An unemployed man has been remanded into police custody by the District Magistrate Court in Enchi for stealing GHS20,000.00 from a trader at the Asankrangwa-Takoradi lorry station in the Western Region. The accused, Abraham William Abudu Hakim, admitted to the charge of stealing but will have his sentence deferred until May 14, 2026, as stated by His Worship Lawrance Buanor-Bue.
According to Ghana News Agency, Police Inspector Stephen Offei Asante, who is prosecuting the case, informed the court that the complainant, Genevieve Gyan, is a trader based in Asankrangwa and resides in the same area as Hakim. The two were acquainted before the incident occurred.
Inspector Offei Asante detailed that on May 4, 2026, around 9:30 am, Hakim approached Gyan at the lorry station, where she operates a drinks shop, and requested employment as a laborer. The complainant agreed and tasked him with arranging drinks in the shop.
The prosecution revealed that at approximately 1:00 pm, after Hakim had left the shop, Gyan realized that a cash sum of GHS20,000.00, which included her daily sales, was missing. Suspecting Hakim, the complainant began searching for him and received a tip-off about his whereabouts at a location known for alleged cannabis sales.
Gyan located Hakim at the specified place and, with assistance from bystanders, apprehended him, subsequently handing him over to the police in Asankrangwa. Upon re-arrest, Hakim confessed to the crime and surrendered GHS13,200.00 of the stolen money to the authorities.
