Moscow: A Ukrainian drone struck a residential building near central Moscow early on Monday, the city's mayor reported, days before Russia's Victory Day military parade.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mayor Sergei Sobyanin stated on Telegram, as reported by the state news agency TASS, that thankfully there were no injuries from the incident. The affected building, identified by the Kyiv Independent as a luxury high-rise, is situated in a western district of the capital, an area that also accommodates various embassies. Moreover, Sobyanin mentioned that two additional Ukrainian drones were intercepted and shot down by air defences.
Russia's Defence Ministry had previously indicated in late April that the upcoming Victory Day parade on May 9 would proceed without tanks and missiles, citing concerns over potential Ukrainian drone attacks. This annual parade marks the anniversary of the Soviet Union's victory over Nazi Germany in World War II.
While reports of Ukrainian drone attacks on the greater Moscow area are frequent, they predominantly target airports, military facilities, and suburbs. Damage to civilian infrastructure in the capital remains rare, with most drones being intercepted according to official statements.
Ukraine has been engaged in conflict with Russian forces for more than four years. During this period, Russia has consistently targeted Ukraine's rear areas with drones and missiles, resulting in civilian casualties and damage to homes and critical infrastructure.
