Krobo: The United Krobo Foundation (UKF) has expressed dissatisfaction over the government's perceived lack of response to its petition addressed to President John Dramani Mahama concerning the operations of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in Kroboland. The foundation warns that the continued silence could lead to further actions by the group and the residents.
According to Ghana Web, the petition, dated March 13, 2026, outlines several grievances, including alleged overbilling, poor service delivery, and persistent mistreatment of Krobo consumers in Yilo and Lower Manya Krobo. The appeal, endorsed by UKF leadership and several local figures, was also copied to various government officials, including the Energy Minister, Eastern Regional Minister, and the National Security Minister, among others.
Amidst perceived delays, UKF has reiterated its demands, urging urgent intervention to prevent escalating tensions. Their primary demand is for the Volta River Authority (VRA) to take over electricity supply in the region, citing the presence of major hydroelectric facilities and lack of compensation to affected communities as justification.
The petition also demands compensation for victims of a 2019 shooting incident linked to the dispute, the withdrawal of ECG from Kroboland, and the implementation of recommendations from the Kofi Afewu Committee report, which reportedly corroborated the concerns of the Krobo people.
Regarding billing, the group demands transparency, particularly concerning a disputed GHS168 million debt attributed to Krobo consumers. They challenge ECG to provide verifiable customer account records and accuse the company of violating Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) regulations.
Maxwell Jones Tetteh, the Foundation's Secretary, voiced concerns over the lack of official response to the petition in an interview, describing it as a setback in resolving the long-standing dispute. He highlighted the residents' commitment to paying for electricity despite past billing discrepancies and emphasized their stance against exploitation and injustice.
The UKF warns that continued inaction could prompt residents to take further steps to press their demands. Tetteh stressed that while Kroboland's people are peace-loving, they are determined to defend their rights if authorities do not intervene.
The ongoing dispute between ECG and Kroboland communities has persisted for years, primarily due to disagreements over billing systems, the transition to prepaid meters, and enforcement measures. Tensions peaked in 2019 during a confrontation related to meter installations, which resulted in casualties and increased mistrust between residents and the power distributor.
The United Krobo Foundation asserts that swift government intervention is essential to restoring calm and ensuring a sustainable and transparent electricity supply system in the area.
