London: The United Kingdom has reaffirmed its support for Morocco's autonomy plan as the 'most credible, viable and pragmatic basis' for resolving the Sahara issue. The position was reiterated on Thursday by the UK Foreign Secretary, Ms Yvette Cooper, following talks with Morocco's Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Mr Nasser Bourita, during his official visit to London.
According to Ghana News Agency, Ms Cooper stated that the UK continues to support Morocco's 2007 autonomy proposal within the framework of the United Nations-led political process. She urged all parties involved in the Sahara dispute to engage urgently and constructively to reach a mutually acceptable solution.
The UK's stance on this issue was previously articulated during the Morocco-UK Strategic Dialogue held in Rabat on June 1, 2025, where both countries emphasized their commitment to supporting UN efforts aimed at ending the long-standing dispute. In line with its position, the United Kingdom expressed its intention to continue working at bilateral, regional, and international levels to support a peaceful and durable settlement.
Ms Cooper also welcomed the strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries, describing the partnership as 'of great value' to both peoples. She highlighted expanding opportunities for cooperation, particularly in connection with preparations for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which Morocco is set to co-host.
Morocco and the United Kingdom maintain longstanding diplomatic ties, underpinned by growing cooperation in trade, security, education, and cultural exchange.
