UHAS Celebrates Milestone with 1,097 Graduates at 10th Congregation Ceremony

Accra: The University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) celebrated the second session of its 10th Congregation ceremony on Friday, marking a significant milestone as 1,097 students graduated from various health and allied science programmes. According to Ghana News Agency, the ceremony, held at the University's main campus in Ho, witnessed the conferment of degrees and qualifications to 967 undergraduate and 130 postgraduate students. The event was themed 'From Knowledge to Action: Bridging Africa's Reproductive Health Gap - The Role of Health Training Institutions.' In his address, Volta Regional Minister Mr. James Gunu commended UHAS for its contributions to healthcare delivery, research, innovation, and national development. He highlighted the university's reputation as a leading health training institution in Ghana and Africa, producing highly skilled professionals and advancing research and innovation. Mr. Gunu acknowledged UHAS as a legacy of the National Democratic Congress administration and ass ured the university community of the government's commitment to improving infrastructure and learning conditions. He addressed challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, poor road networks, and accommodation deficits, emphasizing the government's dedication to completing the UHAS Multi-Purpose Laboratory Complex, touted as the largest medical laboratory facility under construction in West Africa. He also mentioned discussions with the Ministry of Roads and Highways regarding road improvements around the university, with construction expected to commence soon. Mr. Gunu highlighted health sector interventions under President John Dramani Mahama, including the Free Primary Healthcare initiative and the MahamaCare programme, aimed at addressing healthcare needs not fully covered under the NHIS. Professor Lydia Aziato, Vice Chancellor of UHAS, congratulated the graduates for their dedication and academic excellence, urging them to commit to lifelong learning and professional development. She emphasized the im portance of emerging trends and innovations in health sciences and encouraged graduates to uphold the university's values of excellence, integrity, and service. Professor Kodzo Gavua, Chairman of the University Governing Council, noted that UHAS had produced over 13,000 health professionals since its first congregation in 2016. He commended the faculty and staff for their commitment and appealed to the government for the completion of key infrastructure projects to support quality education. Valedictorian Ms. Abigail Afrifa, a Physiotherapy graduate, expressed gratitude to the university and her support system, encouraging her fellow graduates to make meaningful societal contributions. She emphasized integrity, professionalism, and compassion in their careers, urging resilience and perseverance in overcoming challenges. The ceremony was attended by government officials, traditional authorities, alumni, and well-wishers, celebrating the achievements of the graduates and the university's role in shaping futu re healthcare leaders.
