Accra: The University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) Basic School recently held its inaugural Thanksgiving, Graduation, and Awards Ceremony. This event marked the transition of Kindergarten Two pupils to Basic One, the graduation of Basic Nine students, and recognized the achievements of outstanding learners and educators.
According to Ghana News Agency, the vibrant ceremony took place at the school's premises and featured the commissioning of Basic Nine graduates as Youth Anti-Drug Advocates. This initiative followed a two-day training program conducted by the Narcotics Control Commission in collaboration with UHAS.
Dr. Dickson Tsey, Principal of the Evangelical Presbyterian College of Education, Amedzofe, delivered the keynote address, highlighting the ceremony as a celebration of academic achievement and hope for the future. Dr. Tsey emphasized that graduation marks the completion of one educational phase and the beginning of another, with certificates and awards symbolizing perseverance and hard work.
Addressing the theme 'Redeeming the Next Generation Through Basic Education,' Dr. Tsey underscored the importance of quality basic education as the foundation for national success. He envisioned the graduating students as future leaders and professionals shaping Ghana's future.
Quoting Nelson Mandela, Dr. Tsey reaffirmed education's role as a transformative tool and commended UHAS for its visionary initiative in establishing the Basic School. He noted that the institution prepares future professionals by fostering critical thinking and innovation from an early age.
Dr. Tsey acknowledged significant improvements in Ghana's basic education sector, with more graduate teachers entering early childhood education. He stressed the importance of character formation, urging education to instill values like honesty, discipline, and respect alongside academic knowledge.
He encouraged parental involvement in children's moral and emotional development and commended teachers for their dedication to nurturing young minds. Dr. Tsey also highlighted the need for schools to prepare learners for a world shaped by technological advancements by promoting critical thinking and creativity.
Professor Evelyn Korkor Ansah, Chairperson of the UHAS Basic School Board, expressed gratitude for divine blessings and recognized the achievements of learners and staff. She urged participants to maintain a spirit of gratitude, drawing inspiration from biblical teachings.
Mr. Seth Korgah, Head of the School, noted the ceremony's significance as it marked the end of a successful academic year. He explained that the event centered on thanksgiving to acknowledge divine guidance and protection throughout the school's five-year journey.
The Youth Anti-Drug Advocates commissioned during the event are expected to serve as ambassadors against drug abuse in their communities. They received certificates endorsed by UHAS and the Narcotics Control Commission.
The ceremony also included cultural performances and an exhibition of creative works by students, with encouragement for parents and guests to support the initiative by purchasing displayed items. The event was attended by parents, staff, UHAS officials, Narcotics Control Commission representatives, and other distinguished guests.
