Accra: The management of the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) has responded to allegations made by Ghanaian-American comedian Michael Blackson regarding the treatment of his late mother at the hospital. Blackson's mother, who was 83, was receiving medical care at UGMC until her passing.
According to Ghana Web, UGMC issued a statement on August 5, 2026, expressing sympathy for Blackson and his family while asserting that the allegations posted by the comedian on social media are false. The statement emphasized that the claims do not accurately represent the medical care provided to Blackson's mother, who was referred to UGMC from another hospital and remained there from May 27 to July 16, 2026.
UGMC has chosen not to address Blackson's specific allegations directly due to patient confidentiality obligations. The hospital reiterated its commitment to ethical standards and core values, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding patient confidentiality even after death. UGMC stated it would not disclose or publicly discuss any details related to a patient's diagnosis, treatment, or medical records.
The hospital also refuted claims regarding the professionalism of its staff and financial motivations. UGMC highlighted that all clinical decisions are made by qualified healthcare professionals based on sound medical judgment and in consultation with the patient's family when necessary. The statement assured that the hospital's billing and financial processes are transparent and operate independently of clinical decision-making.
In response to Blackson's social media posts on August 4, 2026, the comedian accused UGMC of repeatedly misdiagnosing his mother's illness and suggested that these errors were deliberate attempts to exploit him financially. He criticized the hospital staff for prioritizing monetary gain over patient care and alleged that individuals without financial means are at risk of losing their lives if treated at UGMC. Blackson also claimed that hospital staff lied about his mother's condition and demanded money when he attempted to transfer her to another facility. He further alleged that a staff member solicited money from him when he went to identify his mother's remains.
