Tamale: The University of Developmental Studies (UDS) has been crowned champions of the fourth BCA Ghana Tertiary Team Chess Championship, achieving an impressive tally of six gold medals and one silver. The event saw participation from 81 elite chess players representing 11 tertiary institutions, including the University of Ghana, KNUST, UCC, and Accra Technical University.
According to Ghana News Agency, UDS emerged victorious after five intense rounds, securing the championship by earning nine match points through four decisive wins and one draw. Their consistent performance across all boards was instrumental in outperforming strong competitors and establishing themselves as the leading tertiary chess team in the country.
UDS, with its main campus located in Tamale, has previously gained national attention by winning the 2025 FISU Universities World Football Championship in China, further solidifying its reputation in the academic and sports arenas.
In a closely contested championship, Ashesi University secured the second position with a commendable eight match points. Meanwhile, the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) also garnered eight match points, finishing unbeaten with three wins and two draws. However, due to tie-breaks, UHAS placed third and earned the bronze medal.
The 4th BCA Ghana Tertiary Team Chess Championship continues to be a significant event in Ghana's university chess scene, further cementing UDS's status as a powerhouse in tertiary chess. The competition also highlighted individual talents, with Muhammed Habiba from the University of Cape Coast winning the Christiana Ashley Best Female Player Award, and Ayenor Bright from All Nations University receiving the Professor Richard M. K. Adanu Overall Best Player Award.
