Rabat: The United States has reaffirmed its recognition of Morocco's sovereignty over the Sahara, underscoring its support for a lasting political solution to the long-standing territorial dispute.
According to Ghana News Agency, U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Mr. Christopher Landau addressed a press conference in Rabat following discussions with Morocco's Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Mr. Nasser Bourita. Mr. Landau stated, "The United States recognizes Morocco's sovereignty over the Sahara."
Mr. Landau highlighted that the United States is actively working within the framework of the most recent United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797 to facilitate a peaceful resolution to the conflict. He emphasized the urgency of the matter by stating, "This situation cannot wait another 50 years or 150 years or 200 years to be resolved."
During the meeting, the U.S. official reiterated Washington's ongoing support for Morocco's autonomy proposal, describing it as "serious, credible and realistic" and asserting it as "the only basis for a just and lasting solution to the territorial dispute over the Sahara."
Furthermore, Mr. Landau emphasized U.S. support for American businesses seeking to invest and operate in the Sahara, pointing to economic cooperation as an integral part of the broader bilateral relations between the United States and Morocco.
The meeting is part of ongoing consultations between Morocco and the United States aimed at strengthening political, economic, and strategic partnership ties.
