Accra: The Minister of Energy and Green Transition, Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor, has announced that two generating units at the Akosombo Dam have been restored following recent disruptions to the power supply. This development comes in the wake of a fire incident at the Akosombo Substation, which had temporarily disrupted power evacuation and generation.
According to Ghana Web, Dr. Jinapor made this announcement during the Government Accountability Series, revealing that engineers have made significant progress in bringing the units back into operation after emergency technical works. He stated, "I am pleased to report that through emergency technical interventions and shared determination, the first generating unit was successfully restored yesterday. This afternoon, I just received confirmation that the second unit has also been successfully synchronised, bringing the total to two units as I address you."
The minister further explained that efforts are ongoing to restore the third and remaining units to full operation as quickly and safely as possible. The situation has led to power supply challenges across Ghana, as the Akosombo Dam is the country's largest source of electricity generation. "This unfortunate and unprecedented disaster, which has resulted in the temporary curtailment of power from our largest generation source, the Akosombo Dam, has led to severe supply challenges not witnessed in recent times," he noted.
Dr. Jinapor attributed the swift restoration work to the engineers and technical teams who have been working under challenging conditions to ensure the facility's full operational capacity. He expressed his appreciation by stating, "... I wish to take this opportunity to commend and salute our engineers and technical teams who have remained on site, working tirelessly under extremely difficult conditions to restore the system to full operation. Your dedication, professionalism, and unwavering commitment in the face of this challenging situation are truly commendable."
The restoration of these units is anticipated to immediately alleviate the supply deficit that has led to widespread outages across the Ashanti, Central, and Tema regions over the past 48 hours.
