Istanbul: A high-profile trial has opened for Ekrem Imamoglu, a jailed opposition leader and ousted mayor of Istanbul, on charges related to founding and leading a criminal organization, as well as bribery and money laundering. The prosecution is seeking a sentence of more than 2,000 years in prison. Alongside Imamoglu, who is a prominent opponent of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, a total of 407 people have been charged, with 105 currently in pre-trial detention.
According to Ghana News Agency, among the defendants are Imamoglu's lawyer, his spokesman, and journalists, including Rusen €š¬¡akir, one of the country's most critical liberal voices. Human rights groups have criticized the trial, calling it politically motivated. Imamoglu's wife, Dilek Imamoglu, has highlighted the trial's significance as both a personal matter and an important test for the rule of law in Turkey.
Imamoglu is affiliated with the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) and has been the party's presidential candidate, representing the strongest rival to Erdogan. He was arrested in March last year on corruption charges and subsequently removed from his position as the mayor of Istanbul. In addition to the current trial, Imamoglu faces several other pending cases, and his university degree, a prerequisite for presidential candidacy, has been revoked.
