Washington: US President Donald Trump is threatening Canada with 100% tariffs to prevent closer economic cooperation between the northern neighbor of the United States and China. If Canada were to sign a deal with China, the country would immediately be subject to a 100% tariff on all Canadian goods imported into the US, Trump wrote on the Truth Social platform on Saturday.
According to Ghana News Agency, Trump expressed his concerns via a post, stating, "If Governor Carney thinks he is going to make Canada a 'Drop Off Port' for China to send goods and products into the United States, he is sorely mistaken." In this statement, Trump referred to Carney, the Prime Minister of Canada, using the term "governor" to belittle his role, reflecting Trump's past assertion that Canada should become the 51st state of the US.
Carney recently traveled to Beijing and announced plans for enhanced cooperation with China. Both countries agreed on concrete steps in trade, with the Canadian government stating that Ottawa had withdrawn some of its tariffs on Chinese electric cars. In return, China agreed to eliminate trade barriers for Canadian agricultural products such as rapeseed.
