Tarkwa: The Environmental Health Unit in the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality is set to issue identification tags to over 150 tricycle operators involved in waste collection in Tarkwa. The initiative aims to ensure that operators approved by the assembly dispose of refuse only at authorized locations.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Benjamin Osei, a public health engineer at the environmental health unit, disclosed this during a meeting organized for tricycle operators engaged in door-to-door waste collection in Tarkwa. He highlighted that the meeting was intended to support the assembly's waste management operations and other major service providers within the municipality.
Mr. Osei mentioned that since the tricycle operators play a crucial role, the meeting aimed to formalize their operations, bringing them under a single association to facilitate the dissemination of important information. He urged operators to register their tricycles and obtain driving licenses, emphasizing that riding without a license is an offense. Additionally, he advised operators to cover the refuse they collect to prevent spills during transportation.
Mr. Micheal Vigbgor, an environmental waste management worker, praised the unit for the initiative, noting that many operators joined the work without prior education from the assembly. He stated that the unit had provided rules and regulations to guide their work, aiming to prevent indiscriminate dumping of refuse. He recommended regular radio programs by the environmental health unit to inform operators unable to attend the meeting about joining the association.
Mr. Ransford Nana Baidoo supported the unit's actions, asserting that the initiative would enhance respect for their work in maintaining the town's cleanliness. He urged the unit to address any misconduct among operators to ensure those committed to their work achieve positive results. Mr. Baidoo also encouraged colleagues willing to engage in waste collection to join the association for legal protection, training opportunities, and increased trust among households and clients.
