Accra: Commercial transport operators have put a hold on their planned 30% increase in transport fares following discussions with the Ministry of Transport. This decision comes after a meeting between transport unions and the Ministry, addressing the escalating costs of fuel and other operational expenses.
According to Ghana Web, the Deputy Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Samuel Amoah, shared insights from the meeting with Citi News. Amoah stated that the union expressed its concerns to the Ministry, which in turn assured them that measures were being taken to reduce fuel prices.
Amoah highlighted that the union proposed the government work towards reducing fuel prices to alleviate the financial strain on transport operators. The Ministry responded by acknowledging the union's concerns and confirmed ongoing efforts to bring down fuel prices.
After thorough discussions, both parties agreed to temporarily suspend the fare increase. Amoah noted that despite the agreement, there is a possibility of another fuel price hike in the upcoming pricing window, based on their investigations.
He cautioned that the transport operators may have to revisit negotiations if fuel prices rise again, as it would pose significant challenges for drivers to manage the financial pressures. The unions had initially planned to implement the fare increase before the next pricing window for petroleum products scheduled for Friday, July 31, 2026.
