Kasoa: The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) and the Commercial Transport Operators of Ghana have issued a stern warning that transport fares on the Kasoa-Winneba route will see a 20% increase if urgent repairs are not undertaken on the deteriorating road.
According to Ghana Web, the transport operators expressed their concerns in a joint press release issued on June 24, 2026. The release highlighted the poor condition of the Kasoa-Winneba Road, which has become a significant challenge for both drivers and commuters. The statement recalled a demonstration held on June 12, 2026, during which the operators gave the government a two-week ultimatum to start repair works.
The statement further noted that as of June 24, 2026, no substantial progress had been made on the road. The poor state of the road is reportedly causing vehicle damage, increased fuel consumption, and significant travel delays. In light of this, the transport operators have announced their intention to increase fares by 20% starting Monday, June 29, 2026, if no action is taken.
The proposed fare hike is intended to cover the additional costs faced by drivers, such as higher fuel consumption, vehicle maintenance, and the necessity of using alternative routes. The operators have called upon the government and the Ministry of Roads and Highways to promptly address the road's condition to prevent the fare increase.
In their appeal to commuters, the transport operators emphasized that the fare adjustment is crucial for protecting their livelihoods and ensuring the continued operation of their vehicles. The statement was signed by key representatives from both the GPRTU and the Commercial Transport Operators of Ghana, including Samuel Amoah, Eric Larty Lamptey, Ben Boahen, and Asonaba Nana Wiredu.
