Traders at Makola Market Threaten Protest Over Relocation Plans

Accra: The Interim Market Manager at the 31st December Makola Market (A and B), Ebenezer Bekoe, has announced a possible demonstration by traders if plans by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) to relocate them from the market proceed without proper consultation and alternative trading spaces. According to him, the intended relocation exercise has created fear and uncertainty among traders and workers who depend on the market for their daily livelihood. According to Ghana Web, Bekoe stated that the traders feel threatened by the arrangement, insisting that many of them have invested heavily in their businesses and rely entirely on daily sales to support their families, pay school fees, rent, and meet other financial obligations. He warned that any forced relocation without proper measures in place could severely disrupt businesses and worsen the economic hardship already facing many traders. Bekoe disclosed that traders are expected to march to the Jubilee House on Friday, May 15, to petition President Jo hn Dramani Mahama over the matter. He expressed that the traders are prepared for drastic action, with placards ready and a permit secured from the police. Letters have already been sent to the Jubilee House, and the traders plan to move in significant numbers. He further mentioned that preparations for the demonstration have been completed, with a significant turnout expected for the procession to the seat of government. Bekoe assured that although they initially informed the police of a minimum of 100 participants, the actual number is likely to exceed expectations.
