Tolon District Assembly Supports 70 Persons with Disabilities to Boost Livelihoods

Tolon: The Tolon District Assembly has extended support to 70 Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) across the district to enhance their livelihoods. The beneficiaries received a variety of cash and income-generating items, including deep freezers, laptops, poly tanks, and industrial sewing machines. The total value of the support was GHS150,000. According to Ghana Web, the initiative is facilitated by the Social Welfare Department and is part of the government's commitment to social inclusion and economic empowerment under the District Assembly Common Fund (DACF) allocation. This support was funded through the 5% share of the DACF specifically designated for PWDs. Micheal Deku, the Tolon District Director of the Social Welfare Department, noted that this marks the third time the Assembly has supported PWDs to enhance their livelihoods, with previous disbursements proving successful. He emphasized that the fund continues to assist PWDs in areas such as business development, agriculture, education, and health. De ku reiterated that the beneficiaries are utilizing the support effectively to improve their lives and cautioned them against selling the items, encouraging them to use the support to become more self-reliant and financially independent. Seidu Braimah, the Tolon District Chief Executive, who presented the cash and items, urged beneficiaries to use the support for its intended purposes to ensure sustainable economic growth for their families. Braimah explained that the government has prioritized the needs of PWDs, increasing the DACF allocation for Persons with Disabilities from 3% to 5% to foster social inclusion and economic empowerment. He further noted that the social protection policy is designed to provide economic empowerment, medical support, and educational assistance. Mohammed Braimah, a PWD and resident of Nyankpala, received GHS2,000 cash for health purposes and expressed gratitude to the fund managers and the Tolon District Assembly for the support. Known as Major Seidu, he pledged to utilize the funds responsibly.
