Today in History: President Mahama Names Brigadier-General William Agyapong as CDS

Accra: Exactly a year ago, in 2025, President John Dramani Mahama replaced Chief of Defence Staff, Major General Thomas Oppong-Peprah, with Brigadier General William Oppong. That same year, he announced a major shake-up in the Armed Forces.

According to Ghana Web, the dismissal was contained in a statement issued by the Minister in charge of Government Communication, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, on Monday, March 17, 2026. The statement announced the appointment of several Acting Service Chiefs for the Ghana Armed Forces, pending consultation with the Council of State.

The appointments included Brigadier General William Agyapong as Acting Chief of the Defence Staff, Brigadier General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu as Acting Chief of Army Staff, Commodore Godwin Livinus Blessing as Acting Chief of Naval Staff, Air Commodore Eric Agyen-Frempong as Acting Chief of Air Staff, and Brigadier General Glover Ashong Annan as Acting Chief of Staff.
