Kumasi: Timber traders' representative, Edem Koko Edem, has urged the government to intervene in the challenges confronting players in the timber industry, particularly their dealings with the Forestry Commission and security agencies. Speaking on Angel FM in Kumasi, Edem emphasized the urgent need for authorities to address the difficulties traders face during the transportation of timber products.
According to Ghana Web, Edem specifically appealed to the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, to step in and help resolve the concerns before they escalate further. He warned that failure to intervene could lead to disgrace for the government, President John Mahama, and the Chief of Staff himself. Timber traders have expressed confidence in Debrah's ability to listen to their grievances and facilitate a lasting solution.
Ghana earned US$260 million from timber exports and sales in 2025, as reported by the Forestry Commission. Edem highlighted the significant role of the Chief of Staff in addressing the traders' plight, given his position's influence. He also reflected on the political dynamics during the 2024 electioneering period, noting that traders welcomed President John Dramani Mahama but denied former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia access to campaign at the Techiman Timber Market.
Edem further noted that some individuals who facilitated Mahama's engagement with traders are now dissatisfied with the industry's current state of affairs. He called on the government to engage stakeholders and review policies affecting the timber sector to ensure smooth business operations and protect livelihoods dependent on the industry.
