Accra: Government spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu has weighed in on the ongoing debate surrounding the arrest of individuals accused of publicly threatening the life of President John Dramani Mahama and claims that the arrests are politically motivated. Speaking in a sit-down interview on Channel One TV, shared on X and sighted by GhanaWeb on August 4, 2026, Felix Kwakye Ofosu stated that anyone who threatens the life of the president will face arrest.
According to Ghana Web, Felix Kwakye Ofosu emphasized that no one has been arrested merely for exercising their right to free speech. He cited examples of New Patriotic Party (NPP) executives who have openly criticized the government without facing any arrests. Ofosu further noted that although the government supports freedom of expression, it will not tolerate threats against the life of the president.
In his statements, Ofosu highlighted the seriousness of threats made on platforms like TikTok, where individuals have threatened to harm the president. He remarked, 'But if you sit on TikTok and threaten the life of a president, saying you will behead the president, put him in a cocoa sack, and attack his wife, you cannot go scot-free. If you did that in any advanced democracy, they would hold you accountable. If you threaten somebody's life, let alone that of a president, then they will catch up with you.'
Reacting to former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia's recent call for the prosecution of a National Democratic Congress (NDC) organiser accused of making offensive comments about him to be discontinued, Ofosu described the gesture as politically motivated. He pointed out the inconsistency in Dr. Bawumia's stance, referencing a pending court case involving journalist Bobie Ansah over allegations made against Bawumia's wife and former First Lady Rebecca Akufo-Addo.
Ofosu questioned Dr. Bawumia's inaction during his tenure as Vice President when Bobie Ansah was put on trial for accusations against the First Lady. 'When he was Vice President, Bobie Ansah accused his wife and the then First Lady, Madam Rebecca Akufo-Addo, of appropriating state land. The government of the day, in which he was Vice President, put him on trial. That trial is actually still ongoing. The matter is still before the court. What was his position at the time? Did he utter a word when he had power and was in a position to influence events? He didn't. So nobody can take this latest announcement seriously. It is simply an attempt to take political advantage. This is politicking,' he added.
