Accra: Multiple mobile phones belonging to patients were reportedly stolen from the Maternity Ward of Mamobi General Hospital in the early hours of Monday, between 12:00 a.m. and 1:00 a.m. Patients and relatives who were on the ward during that period said the thefts occurred while most people were asleep, despite the presence of security guards stationed at the hospital's main entrance.
According to Ghana Web, one of the victims, Comfort Ahiadzebge, discovered her Tecno Pop 50 phone was missing when she woke up around 12:30 a.m. "I looked around, and my phone was nowhere to be found. Before long, all the patients in the ward started complaining that their phones were gone. There were three of us in the ward," she said in an interview with African News journalist Paul Mensah Nsor, whose wife was also a victim and whom he had gone to visit at the ward.
Some patients expressed frustration, stating that hospital officials have responded by saying "every patient is responsible for his or her property." This has raised concerns among relatives, as one noted, "This is a patient who is seriously ill and is supposed to be protected. Expecting her to provide her own security in a hospital, especially on a maternity ward, raises serious questions."
Nurses at the facility reportedly told patients that such incidents "have been happening regularly" at the hospital. Despite the recurring nature of these thefts, the case has not yet been reported to the police, and no suspects have been identified so far.
